69 z28 silver grille paint

Has anyone in here painted an NOS black grille the correct silver?

I have done silver to black for an SS Chevelle and used SEM Landau Black.
But this time I need to go Black to silver for my z/28.

Was hoping to find a spray bomb paint that replicates this the best.
Any got a remedy??

I did mine a number of years back using Eastwood Argent Silver. I would say it turned out good.

Gonna be hard to find a decent spray bomb. Just not that durable.

I have a body guy who can shoot it. I need to paint the outer part of the grille anyway.
I also need him to paint the grille stiffener.

I did mine a number of years back using Eastwood Argent Silver. I would say it turned out good.

I did the same thing with my 69 Z-28 grille. Turned out well also.

Yes. I know the original was lacquer, but figured the urethane would be more durable. Yes, singe stage Omni. I realize Omni isn't the top of the line, but being urethane, it will still be more durable than lacquer.

AU Omni is single stage urethane and is quite durable too. May be easier for your painter, if he isn't familiar with enamel.


I've used the Eastwood Argent Silver on wheels and it is a decent paint, but the Omni would, in all likelihood, be a better and longer lasting product.

You could have a SEM spray can mixed for the PPG 3568. Here is a Daytona Yellow one I had mixed that I did a grill and stiffner with. Have used alot of these for certain things and always work great. Usually around $25 depending on color.

I'm no expert, but it seems to me that in the past, it was recommended that you primer the grille first, with a greyish white primer, and then follow with the argent. Not only do the tabs and such look correct, but the tone of the argent is closer to original. Sorry, I don't know the color codes.

I have the grille out. Its an original black one. Im going to scuff it up and try the SEM custom mix in a spot on the back and see how it compares to my headlight bezels.

Yes you can certainly have any color mixed and installed in a spray can. Any paint store worth anything can do this for you. It's great for guys that don't have a gun or a means to mix their own paint.

I've had it done many times for customers when I was painting tube chassis cars for a fabrication shop. They wanted little aerosol cans to touch up the roll bars as they get scratched getting in and out, flopping the seat belts around etc...

So if you want a custom urethane paint, Omni, or what ever brand mixed up in a spray can, that's probably the simplest and cheapest solution for guys wanting to shoot small parts.

Yes, most paint stores can put the single stage products in a spray can for you.

My grill was an NOS black grill. I primed it with white epoxy, so that if there were a small chip in the silver, it wouldn't be as noticeable.

Jonesy, one of the things i did, although on an orig bone color grill was to totally refinish the grill, we completely repainted it the same bone color (customers mix) - then we followed up with the silver, and then the body color overspray on the surround. Looks 100% original. The bone color will help with the silver coverage most effectively.

Also - if you go silver over black then for sure your headlamp bezels will be slightly off....I would suggest a quick respray of those as well. Light scuff and reshoot to get that consistency.

Well I went to the auto body supply shop here.
They looked up PPG 3568 and it’s 1983 Ford Mercury Loden Green.
I definitely did not have that mixed

From the research I did to determine the "correct" Argent Silver (AS) paint mix for rally wheels, I learned from NCRS research that Kelsey-Hayes used several different shades of Argent over their long production run so NCRS concluded there is no single correct shade of AS.

I should have shot a series of Tests to accomplish a "Flatter" Finish.
Per spec sheet: SU4985 Universal Matting Agent.

They Came out WAY to glossy, I knew better and have a recovery plan to scuff with 0000 steel wool later on the Face portion that is visible at a later date.

The Silver grain is very tight, fine & well distributed, clean w/o weird tints. It took many many coats to cover the black primer. I shot it within the "recoat" period specified. Patience was required following the Tech sheet. I also did not go crazy on "body" working the Wheels since they cleaned up very nice with Glass Bead & Walnut media & I am not super good or willing to Body work wheels.
I am a Fan of Krylon 1403, but for the durability of a single stage two component product will be better in the long run I feel.
