Helping my neighbor with his 69 Chevelle re-fresh...have a few questions:

Malibu cloned to SS396...325hp w/ 4spd and power steering.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-the fan shroud doesn't look deep enough...fan blades are barely inside...the shroud measures 2.5 inches in depth...seems to me it should cover the blades more completely. He has a long water pump...with clutch fan setup.

-there is a brown wire with a 90* end [looks original] that is near the brake booster. Is there supposed to be an idiot light connection for the brakes?? He installed a repro booster, master cylinder combo...

-proper way to bleed brakes for this car...should he remove master and bleed separately?? or can we do this installed?? of course, we don't want fluid on the fresh paint...please advise.

-what is the correct routing of washer hose to squirters [mounted under hood]..I see 2 round holes in the plastic mesh near the windshield..??

-correct place to attach negative cable...I think it goes on the block...??

-he made new inner fender flaps...needs the staples to attach...best source??

well that's enough for now...many thanks in advance :worship:

standing by,

wilma

Below are some of my thoughts on your questions, hope this helps,

-the fan shroud -Check the shroud to make sure it is correct, also you can check to see if it is pulling air through the radiator

-there is a brown wire with a 90* end -should be the brake light wire for the proportioning valve on the frame below the bell crank area on the drivers side.

-proper way to bleed brakes for this car...Master cylinder should alwasy be bench bled off the vehicle so it is level and can get the air out. lay fender covers and use rags to help mitigate the fluid getting on the fenders and inner fenders. bleed as you would normally after it is installed.

-what is the correct routing of washer hose to squirters when you say plastic mesh i assume you are identifying the screen many put on them that is incorrect if you are restoring it. The firewall has two holes near the wiper motor for the hoses to pass into the cowl area and them the hoses are run to either side and connected to the squirters on the hood. there is a clip that goes on the drivers side to help hold the hose since it is longer and needs to avoid the wiper transmission movement. through the holes on the screen might require a little more hose to reach the squirters and look decent but watch for pinching of the hose when the hood is closed.

-correct place to attach negative cable...I think it goes on the block..yes to the boss on the pass side it may even be part of the head.

-he made new inner fender flaps...needs the staples to attach...best source?? not sure of a source but you might be able to use a stiff solid wire that can be bent to retain it, the old inner fenders might have holes you can use to get an idea of the size.

Inner fender flap clips- Noted Chevelle guy Jerry Beasley told me this simple way to make your own clips. Electric fence wire- it comes in steel or aluminum use the steel. Cut desired length use needle nose pliers to shape them and it works and looks great. Been on my car 27 years and still looks new. It’s coated with something that keeps it from rusting.

Fan should be half in and and half out.

Ive seen some documented original cars with black masters, but it seems cast is acceptable

Thanks for all the feedback...

We took the shroud and fan back off...

These are the numbers from the fan...

497840. 916088 E77

the shroud has these numbers 3938165...it is not correct based on what has been posted and what I have seen online...

https://www.npdlink.com/product/shroud-radiator-fan-abs-plastic-24-12-inch-length-x-19-12-inch-height-x-3-14-inch-depth-correct-repro/110263/7201

If we get the correct shroud will this fan be ok..??? or do we need to buy a fan, too. If anyone has a correct factory shroud and perhaps the fan we may be interested.

thanks

The shroud is the 69 assembly line item, which is pretty rare to find. Fan blade should be the 772.

3938165 is the correct number for a 69 BB fan shroud. The later number is a replacement.

Most MCs I've seen from 69s are painted black. Bare cast has been seen too. Personally I'd paint it either with black or a cast paint. It will rust.

Thanks again for all the input...much appreciated.

Regarding the shroud...it doesn't seem 'deep' enough to me...the fan blade barely fits inside...and the blades look they would be dangerous. I'm wondering if someone 'trimmed' this part down???

Can you confirm depth...?? current one is 2.5 inches...repro unit state 3.25...that would at least cover a little more of the fan.

Any clue what the fan I listed is from?? He should probably get the correct 772??

Here's a few pix I just snapped. In order.. I hope.

All these set ups are factory and the fans don't recess into the shrouds all that much. None of these cars have overheating issues. Hope this helps.

1. 1969 396/325 hp fixed pitched fan, no clutch
2. 1969 396/L89 thermostatic fan
3. "
4. 1969 350/300 hp Malibu with factory shroud and theremostatic fan
5. "

PS. I threw the Malibu in for future reference if someone needs it.

Thanks for the photos...

Where is the best place to get the fixed blade fan and spacer shown in the first photo..?? This is a 396/325hp car...no A/C. Seems like that would be the simplest solution and we keep the factory fan shroud.

thanks

I may have a fan and possibly a spacer but not 100% sure. I can post pictures here if someone can confirm what it is for.

Rick...

Please post what you have so we can take a look...I would rather see my friend get real parts if possible.

Thanks...Tom

Tom,

For what it is worth, you might be just as well off to get a 772 fan and a new clutch and you are done. Just a thought.

Rick, I'll compare my 70 L34 and 69 L35 to see if the fan and spacer are the same.

The spacer is 1" wide and the fan, right around 18" in diameter.
