Primedia brought out Musclecar Review magazine for a special winter issue. Lots of Tom Shaw stuff. Has the "look" of the old Musclecar Review. Hopefully if it sells well they will do it again. Has the Gary Holub article in it but the pics are larger than the Chevy Action article. Also has a feature on a '70 Yenko Deuce, 69 Fairlane Ram Air, 65 Goat, Cuda 440-6, '69 Buick GS, '63 409, 70 Boss etc. Also how to replace a factory quarter panel on a '67-68 Camaro.

I may have you pick us up a copy, as there isn't a chance in HADES we can find it here in Themiddleofnowhere! Heck, we had to go to Indianapolis to find the last issue of Hot Rod! No joke! Missouri must be anti-reading or something...

Maybe the real reason is they figure no one can read in Missouri so why bother. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif My local Wal-Mart had about 4-5 issues left. Let me know and I will get them tomorrow. The '70 Deuce was red and was unrestored (original paint/interior). I'm going out of town for a week. Leaving tomorrow afternoon. Let me know before then.

Ummm, I think you have us confused with Arkansas...although, our county is on the Ark/Mo border...yeh, go ahead and grab one for us. Maybe I can get someone to read it to me!

I'm heading to the bookstore today, and hope to find this issue.
Does it look like the material is NEW,or is it recycled from old issues in the past? I hate when magazines recirculate recently old material.

So you dident get a Half of a Hot Rod magazine instead?

whitetop
11-10-2002, 03:13 PM
The magazine is all new not rehashed stuff. There is also a 3 page article on Don Yenko by Cam Benty (ex Popular Hot Rodding editor) who interviewed Don back in '80 or so. 7-9 pics in that article. Talked about his flight with Don down to Road Atlanta and his Citation race car. Cam spent 3-4 days with Don at Canonsburg & Road Atlanta and just wrote the article on what was in his notes and thoughts. The Deuce is owned by a guy in New Jersey named Tom. Had a Supercar Workshop licence plate on it. Don't have the issue handy.

Looked at the Primedia website and found no mention of this magazine. Were there any subscription cards or information in it? If you're going to get one for Rob, would you mind picking one up for me too? I'll send you a check.

If the issue has the Tommy K Deuce in it the pictures were pirated from a photo shoot that Tom Shaw did at Super Car Workshop last year. He did 5 cars that day. He was not able to retain the rights to those photos. That same photo shoot was the one that Joe's 68' Harrell Chevelle was used for the MCR cover. A 69 Yenko Camaro, a 69 375 Nova SS, a 67 Z/28 and the previously mentioned 70 Deuce were photographed that day...BKH

That's Tommy K's deuce, 11k miles, red, 4sp, Hurst car. It's not original paint, but everything else is original, good car. It was at Chevy Vette-Fest a couple of years ago.

It was orig. sold out of Sam Leman Chev. in Roanoke, IL, Mick Price found the car many many years ago. It resurfaced in Seatle, WA about 3 years ago, and Tommy pulled the trigger on it /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

Found it! I had to visit a certain book store on the wrong side of town, but they had several. The same Yenko story on Gary's cars was in CHP.Interesting article on the 68 convert Z ,and the 68 Penske car as well.Look at the 68 Z,is that a 610 intake and one 780 Holley on it?In the Benty article on Yenko, who is this "John" in the epilogue? Was this a typo for Don?Love the Duece.I may be able to buy more if anyone is interested /ubbthreads/images/icons/crazy.gif ....Let me know.

Got a copy at the Fred Meyer store here in the NW. Cover says to "DISPLAY UNTIL FEB 18, 2003". Also says its a Car Craft special edition. A lot of stuff for $3.99, though most of its not too deep (pretty pictures though, and good variety).

I saw that Yenko Deuce prior to its leaving Seattle. The gentleman had decided to liquidate his musclecar collection, located in the main floor of his deep-freeze storage business. I was there to look at a couple of Boss 429's with a friend of mine. The seller's Yenko Camaro had just sold, and the Deuce was on a seller's-honor, no-money hold for a buyer out east. Looked like a sharp car, although it was somewhat difficult to tell with it up against the wall with cardboard and covers protecting it from the loading ramp next to it (not quite a museum atomosphere, but safe and dry I guess.)

Funny how the market has changed in 3 or 4 years-I know the Yenko Camaro must have traded for around $50K, and none of us could justify the $60K he wanted for his triple black Hemi Cuda or the $25K for his Panther Pink Challenger TA. (They're all sold now-just a few also-rans remain. My buddy bought two of the three Boss 429's-good move on his part, especially in hindsight!)

Hey!! Tommy K. sent me an issue by surprise, very cool article on his red deuce. Tommy has one of those cars that you learn something from each time you look at it.

BTW; little box with the colors produced info should say Fathom Blue instead of Fathom Green.

I was subscribing on MCR, before it stopped... Is there posible to subscribe now, does anyone know?
Is there anyone that would care to send a magazine to Norway, aginst a reasonable fee of course?

bbdon
11-23-2002, 04:27 PM
I don't think that there will be a regular magazine to subscribe to. More than likely, they don't want anyome else to use the name Musclecar Review. So they will issue one magazine every year just to keep a current claim on the copyright for that name. When Hachette killed off Cycle magazine several years ago, they did the exact same thing. They come out with a copy of Cycle magazine sportbike issue once a year.

There was about 6 mags at my local Wal mart and they are all gone. Hopfully the bean counters will see this was a good seller and bring it out again soon. Then again based upon past history with these publishers don't get your hopes up to high.

I really hope this wasn't a way for Primedia to cut costs by reducing the payroll.I bought the old MCR for the articles as well as the people writing them.I loved Tom's page as well as Paul Z. and the others. These guy's made this mag what it was, gave it a personality. It may return but it will never be the same.........

I don't think the payroll had anything to do with it. I think that mag was just a dog in terms of sales. That is why all the other musclecar mags folded. We may like MCR but most other hobbyist will not buy it unless it is all Mopar, all Chevy etc. The same reason why the Musclecar Nationals etc never took off. I was the Director of the NMCA back in '90-'92 before the hard core racing bit took over. We found out through many surveys/events/trial and error etc that only a small segment of the hobby want to see cars of different makes other than their own. That is why shows like Super Chevy, Mopar Nationals, Ford Nationals are so popular. There will never be a large show with musclecars like the Street Rod Nationals that pull in 14-15K cars. Will never happen. Too much animosity between the makes. Also most hobbyist only have so much money/time to spend. They will hit their cars marque show before all others.
Dave
