Just an FYI: I closed in on a ZL1 this morning out here at the swap meet.
The Block was actually rather nice; no repairs at all and I looked it over quite closely! However: It had the number "2" in the 3946052 casted smaller than the rest of the prior 6 digits. It was definately not redone and after much thorough closer observations noticed NO date codes on the side walls on either side! The aluminum casting had never been tampered with. The 074 heads that were with it were dated 74 and a day apart! I have seen the smaller "2" digit before but not on a block missing the actual date codes! Just Converstaion here... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I saw this block too, it is now in my garage. It looks to be a really nice piece. I will be posting pictures and codes tomorrow if all goes well. I will also be taking it to the machine to have it checked out, but it looks that all will go well.

Terry,
The engine wasn't cheap. I would rather not say how much as I will probably be selling it after I get it checked out by the machine shop. It seems like what the last guy paid for something makes the next guy think it will be priced the same and causes hard feelings. This engine is beyond awesome and I just gained a new level of respect for ZL-1s. can anyone share more info on hiding date codes, things to ask the machine shop, fair asking price, etc?
Tnanks,
Jason

Just heard back from the machine shop. No cracks or flaws in the block. So it should be for sale soon. It will need new sleeves to make it a 427 again. It now has sleeves that make is a 510. He's checking the heads now. I'd rather sell it to someone here than put it on Ebay, but still have no real idea of value.

I bet you could come pretty close too. He wouldn't budge if that is helpful. Where did you look for a date code?

On the 2 ZL1 blocks I owned, If I recall they were on the side bank below the cyl heads closer to one of the freeze plugs....I couldnt remember anymore on which side but I recall one I had had a date code of 5-26-69... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I've decided the price will be $17,500 providing the heads come back with a OK. Included will be the block, heads, crank, intake(163), oil pan, timing cover, and push rods.

Got the engine back from the machine shop and there are no date codes on it. There is a series of numbers opposite the casting number but I don't see any way they could be a date code. I will post them tomorrow. If any one is interested in this engine please let me know, otherwise it will be going on EBay soon(probably tomorrow) . The heads pressure tested good. The block is also crack free. The crank is STD/STD.

Jason;
The way you describe your engine, I think you have a service only - 4.440 bore block, not a ZL-1.These large bore blocks can't be resleeved to a 4.250 bore. Sorry for the bad news.

According to the machine shop it can.

You better talk to the machine shop again. Even if they could find sleeves to fit they would be too thick to cool properly. It doesn't take much to have over heating problems with a big block.

Jason, I dont think this is a feasable swap to use a 4.250 sleeve where a 4.440 sleeve is used...Remember the OD on the sleeve vs. yours. Your Block should be the 4.250 version. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

That is just what the machine shop told me. If it were me I'd run it this way anyway.

This will be my last post on this. Here is where Ill ask the who's who of this BOARD as well as any others in the know: Sleeve size : does the 4.250 sleeve have a different OD than any larger displacement sleeve to be used here, 4.440 or 4.500 & larger? I am guessing now, but if a larger sleeve is installed, would the aluminum core have to be machined to accept that larger OD if this is the case? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif [the last time I saw this engine setup at Pomona, it was assembled as such in your attatchment above. I never saw the sleeves being different with the heads bolted on.] http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

You are correct, sleeve od's are different. The blocks were the same when they were casted, but as you mentioned the aluminum cores were bored out alot bigger for the 4.440 application. The 4.250 ZL-1 could only be bored saftly to 4.300. Chevrolet made these blocks from 1969 to 1972. Hope this helps.
