Just an FYI: I closed in on a ZL1 this morning out here at the swap meet.
The Block was actually rather nice; no repairs at all and I looked it over quite closely! However: It had the number "2" in the 3946052 casted smaller than the rest of the prior 6 digits. It was definately not redone and after much thorough closer observations noticed NO date codes on the side walls on either side! The aluminum casting had never been tampered with. The 074 heads that were with it were dated 74 and a day apart! I have seen the smaller "2" digit before but not on a block missing the actual date codes! Just Converstaion here... ![]()

I saw this block too, it is now in my garage. It looks to be a really nice piece. I will be posting pictures and codes tomorrow if all goes well. I will also be taking it to the machine to have it checked out, but it looks that all will go well.

Terry,
The engine wasn't cheap. I would rather not say how much as I will probably be selling it after I get it checked out by the machine shop. It seems like what the last guy paid for something makes the next guy think it will be priced the same and causes hard feelings. This engine is beyond awesome and I just gained a new level of respect for ZL-1s. can anyone share more info on hiding date codes, things to ask the machine shop, fair asking price, etc? Just heard back from the machine shop. No cracks or flaws in the block. So it should be for sale soon. It will need new sleeves to make it a 427 again. It now has sleeves that make is a 510. He's checking the heads now. I'd rather sell it to someone here than put it on Ebay, but still have no real idea of value.

I bet you could come pretty close too. He wouldn't budge if that is helpful. Where did you look for a date code?

On the 2 ZL1 blocks I owned, If I recall they were on the side bank below the cyl heads closer to one of the freeze plugs....I couldnt remember anymore on which side but I recall one I had had a date code of 5-26-69...

I've decided the price will be $17,500 providing the heads come back with a OK. Included will be the block, heads, crank, intake(163), oil pan, timing cover, and push rods.
