...and here is the same car when I found it with 12,234 miles in 1987. I was called by the owner in NJ to document the car and when he pulled the plastic tarp off of it, this is what I saw: A 1970 426 Hemi 4-speed Charger R/T-SE. One of four produced. I talked him out of the car and he talked me out of all my money. Wouldn't sell it now, but maybe a trade for a ZL1??? hmmmm

My first car(s). In 1977 I saved my $$$ and bought a 69 Z11 pace car with the wrong motor, trans, etc: I had no clue at the time. I bought it when I was 14. My father was confused at the time due to the large number of children in our household. When we got the car home my mom says to him: "Honey you know his brother just turned 16, he's 14!" Dad looked at me like I was supposed to remind him which kid I was. The car next to it was a 1970 Plymouth Superbird with a 440 Magnum and automatic. My dad and I bought it based on the fact that someone was going to buy the Z11. Of course they didn't and I got "stuck" driving both cars to high school. He eventually sold both of them when I moved out to Colorado to go to Diesel repair school in 1980. I tracked down the current owner of the Z11. He's in CT and got a kick out of being called out of the blue by me. It's not everyday that the almost original owner of your car hunts you down to tell you about your car http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. The car in the foreground is my brother's 75 Monte Carlo. He sold his LA-built 1969 Daytona Yellow SS396 4 speed Camaro to buy that disco-clunker. What a dummy.

This was the beginning of the Mopar Muscle Magazine Project Pit Viper circa January 1993. The car is rolling down the assembly line. I got an insiders press pass as I was the Tech/Managing Editor of Mopar Muscle and Musclecar Review at the time. The guys at the New Mack assembly plant were great but extremely security conscious about where my camera was pointing. I have about 500 slides of the whole assembly plant process. Maybe I'll publish them someday. Anyway, this car, VIN #00102 was mine and I must have spooked them so much that they left a brand new Snap-On 1/4 inch drive ratchet set in the trunk. It was there when I took delivery! The car was sold to us (me) at a deep discount as we were going to use it as the project car for the magazine. It was great time. For months after delivery the guys at Team Viper would send spare parts to us in unmarked boxes for the various articles we were writing. I took delivery in Jan of 1993 and we immediately disassembled the body for repaint. The car was going to be the "Bonzai Blue" of the GTS Show Car, only Dodge had no way of painting the prepainted panels prior to delivery. I remember a funny phone call to the Viper guys when I asked for the paint code for the show car's paint. They said: "Well we can't give you the paint code because it's secret...but we can send you all of the paint and all of the emblems and decals, etc." Not being one to argue, I said Okey Dokey! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here is the assembly line build sheet package. They wouldn't let me keep any of the paperwork but did let me take a photo or 2 of it. No build sheets of any kind ever were left in the cars. They were completely sanitized prior to delivery.

Here was the finished car at Sebring International Raceway in mid 1997. The car held the lap record at Sebring in the SCCA ASP class for a full season. The car was featured in Mopar Muscle from 08/1993 to 05/1995. After the Gen 2 Vipers came out in 1996 my car became pretty much obsolete as it was placed in the class with the newer 450 horse Coupes with the updated suspensions. The car now sits in the middle of my garage with 7,800 "Sunday only" miles, and my kids play in it. It also makes a great work bench too. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Maybe in another 20 years it will be worth something as the first Viper magazine feature car in existance. hi scott,
the chevelle is running a 454 backed by a T-400 and 10" 3500 stall converter. rear is a 12 bolt with 4.88 gears. the vette is owned by a 80 y.o. friend who up until this year would drive it to NE dragway and race it. he would run low 12's at anywhere from 119-125 mph on mickey thompson street tires. car has a super t-10. even though he has a bum left leg don't ever suggest he put an automatic in it!!!a friend of mine drives it sometimes and runs at about 11.40 at 130 granny shifting. we are not serious racers and just like to go up and T&T and help the guy out. he is running a tripower on that blower. very cool guy and we have a blast hangin with him. mike

My 70 Camaro.. Was my daily driver for 4 years.. I completely rebuilt this car. converted it to a 4spd, wicked 350, changed the rear.. and much much more.. It's been everywhere from Baltimore, MD to all over PA to Charlotte, NC to Columbus, OH and finally to Tulsa, OK with me.. Another car I regret selling horribly.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif But it's around here somewhere http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif You can see my old '77 Scout in the background too.

Scroll down to the 3rd row of pictures. You can click on the pictures for a bigger size. It's still unrestored with all it's bumps and bruises. There's been a bunch of work done to detail the engine. I haven't updated the picture for that yet. Yes, it's scared a few people, myself included.

First car, bought from next-door neighbor (original owner) in 1979. I put in a 350 4-bolt with solids and a Pete Jackson gear drive, 1970 M-22 with Hurst Super Shifter III and it had a 12-bolt 3:55 Posi. Photo taken by my then-girlfriend in 1983.

Gary,
Thanks, I wish the garage was bigger (I'd like a "small addition" about the size of Charley's buildings) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif
The Gold one is a factory 402/4 speed .
I also have a 71 SS454 (still in the garage) which will be my next frame off...and another gold 70 402 with A/T, behind the garage ( which I'm begining to consider converting into a convertible)
I've been into the Montes for some time too...
the brown 72 was my first car, my folks owned it since 73.
The 4 speed 70 is the first car I bought and paid for. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I've had it for 17 years now (not a bad buy for a 17 year old kid at $1200)http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Hi Steve, Yes your friend Al was able to help out, he put me in touch with a Sam Risley from Frenchtown NJ who was the New car manager at Taylor Chevy where the car was sold new. Sam remembers driving the car in a parade in Frenchtown he believes it was a town anniversary. Sam said Taylor Chevy ordered many L78 cars they liked the HP cars. The owner of Taylor is somewhere in Florida but he didnt know where. The car was bought by the registered owner before me in 1971 at Smith Ford in Washington NJ Sam said that dealer is still around and I should try and get ahold of them they could still have some records of the previous owner. I havent tried since that was over 30 years ago and wouldnt know where to start.
I also was checking up on the idea of it being the pace car for Flemington Speedway and 2 people said in 69 the Pace car was a 69 Indy pace car. Thanks for the help.

Bruce, I gotta say, still my favorite Yenko of 'em all. BKH gave me a ride to the strip in that car way back in '98 at the very first SCR. I'll never forget the sound of an L-88 at 8,000 RPMS, and seeing the in dash tach riding on the redline. I was beginning to be afraid for my feet. That car will definitely run the number, and 4.10 gears certainly weren't made for top end runs...but don't tell BKH that. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Here's a picture of my 69 Z28, X-33, Garnet Red. All original, except the color of the rally stripes and vinyl top, they should be black instead of white. Owner in 1990 didn't like the color black for some reason. I will eventually take the stripes and vinyl top back to black, since it is a 52B car.
I will post some pictures of my other two 69 Camaro's soon, one being a convertible.

Here it was before the resto started. It had the "Gangsta street racer look".When it comes back out it will be a lot more retro.Black Vtop, and a green color similar to 70 citrus green only brighter.I also plan on super trick wheels and havent decided on the hood.I was thinking of a motion like black stripe,or maybe even a white Vtop with white motion stripe. My hood choices right now seem to be stuck between either a slightly raised L88,or a flat hood with a raised shaker scoop.I like the shaker idea since it will seal better to the carb.BTW,it has a GM aluminum headed .060" over 427 and a glide powering it,and an early nova 12 bolt and slapper bars under it.It is the only project I have right now,but I have owned the car and raced it since 1994,and before that it belong o 3 different friends of mine who all ran it hard and I worked on it for them going back to 1988.The last time this thing was a real driver was around 1980.

It isn't a super car, (it ain't even a very well liked car), but's it's mine and I've owned it for over 18 years. I've owned 9 of these cars over the last 20 years, but this one has always been my baby. It is one of only two built with the RPO C06 Astro Roof option (roof is completely glass from edge to edge) and currently sports a mild .030 over 350, but is undergoing it's second (and final) restoration since it's not a daily driver any more and I can finally do it "right" this time. I'd love to take another Monza and do a phantom Motion Super Monza some day, much like Brad Fanshaw's red Vega, but just on a hatchback Monza instead. I've always loved that paint scheme and the mods Joel did to the Vega's. If Brad makes it to SCR7 w/ his Vega this year, I am THERE!

Here's another of LV's "old" cars... I don't know how many street rod enthusiasts we have here, but this car was totally 100% unreal in its execution and overall "killer" look... the modifications to this real-deal all steel car were mind boggling!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

JT: the '56 is 502 powered, 700R tranny, just a nice driver. The '57 is in the shop getting some do-dads. It'll premier at the Hot-Rod Power Tour...it'll be over-the-top! We're adding 8 turbochargers and a bunch of bodywork mods. Totally crazy!

Dan: Hmmm...I don't think so, or at least I didn't notice any recent mag pics. It's powered by a "built" 400 with the Muncie 4 spd...rocks pretty good between the lights.

Joe: that '37 Ford coupe is an amazing piece of art! Don't drive it though...it's ISCA type stuff.

LOL...there is a big screen and 1 bedroom suite up those stairs in the back of the shop, which is probably where I'll be living when my wife sees the invoice on the '57 Belair convertible modifications. Not to mention the '04 HotRod magazine Chevelle-SS-454 that debuts on the Power Tour. I may have to live at CamaroJoe's after she sees that invoice. Better yet...HawaiianJeff's house.

I pick up an absolute beauty tomorrow in Chicago, but the seller is a member here and I can't say anything until I know it's in my trailer and he hasn't changed his mind...you know who you are http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here is one that I forgot I had on the hard drive. This is my second car. 72 cpe. I bought it new and sold it in 73. This was taken last year at a local cruise. The guy I sold it to still has it and has put approx. 9K mi. on it since. It now has about 29K on it. Completely original down to the paint. Base 350 auto. I should rephrase the second car statement. It's the second car I could drive legally. My first car was a 54 Studebaker Champ. Classic barn story. It had 1800mi on it in 69 when we found it. It was sold before I got my licence to get a 68 Vette cpe.

Thanks Gary, that brought back memories from my youth. Growing up, my buddy down the street and I up were both into Camaros and both of us had 68's. His dad on the other had was huge Ford man and had several; one of them being a blue '68 Shelby GT-500 KR convertible.

I wonder what ever happened to that car. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Sweet 6-pak Bee. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif That's possibly the coolest non-Chevy musclecar going IMO. Factory multiple carbs, 4 pin lift off 'glass hood in racer flat black, and those wheels are killer. Mopar didn't even bother giving you dog dish caps, they knew you were gonna throw em away. They just provided the chrome lug nuts they knew you'd be using to bolt up some aftermarket mags. "American Musclecar" all the way. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

I never noticed it until now, but I must have a thing for vinyl top cars, because this car also has one too. that makes me 3 for 3!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

Here's a pic of my 1967 Chevelle (circa November 1985). This was my first car and I still have it. Paid $2,600 for it because the previous owner had a child on the way.

Only major change since getting it was the addition of 1970 SS wheels and some BF Goodrich TA's and one motor rebuild.

The car has the original engine, trans and rear and is even a Wisconsin car, originally sold in Manitowoc.

Still alot of fun to drive with a 327 and a 4 spd. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

It'll be getting a resto as soon as the L78 car is done.
