I plan to mount up an old set of Torq Thrust D's this week. Should these be run with tubes? I seem to remember these being tubeless back in the day, but also remember them being leakers. Any suggestions?
Bill..I put a set of 1966 vintage International Dragmasters on my 68 a couple of years ago. They only lose about 10 lbs setting in the garage all year. Not bad at all. Tubeless tires.

It's never easy!!!!!! I was warned about valve stems, any suggestions as to what to use? A standard stem does not work and while I have found some that will work I have a choice between a stem that looks like it belongs a on Honda Civic with 20" rims or a stem that looks like it belongs on a Kenworth truck. I know its getting a little nutty when you worry about what the valve stems look like............but that is the nature of my mental illness with these old junks

I've used rubber as well as metal stems on both sets of my TT's and had no problems. Ran them tubeless. Yeah, you gotta' check the tire pressure but you gotta' do that anyway. I don't recall any obvious leak/seep problems. Make sure the stem holes don't have any burrs or hairline stress cracks.

You should be able to get some normal looking bolt thru crome stems...

Here's the picture. Anyone know how to keep these clean? The center section of these appear to be bare metal? Is that the way they came originally? Also, what is the correct hardware for mounting the center caps? Thanks for the help.

I use Simple Green on all my wheels. Just a light spray and work it with a soft bristle brush if needed. I use Nevr-Dull wadding in a can to keep the polished area bright. For the caps I use stainless 8-32 straight slot screws with stainless flat washers on the center caps and only tight enough to hold the caps. Don't want to crack a cap ear or strip out a hole.

Does anyone know when the original Torque Thrusts showed up on the market? I'm thinking '63 or '64.
Did they preceed the Cragars, Internationals, early E/Ts (Wheel Centre Co) or M/T Challengers? It would be very interesting to place all the early aftermarket wheels in chronological order of their introductions.....
I'd like to see this thread continue and expand. It could be a real history lesson. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

I agree Verne...I have a 6/67 Car Craft mag wheel article that shows a lot of wheels including the M/T #1 wheel as they call it which looks like a Rader....they differ from my set because they describe these as being heli-arc welded and the ones I have are riveted...I'd love to see some chronological mag stuff...I know a bunch of guys around here are into collecting old speed catalogs so...lets see what crops up... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Romeo Palamides (dragster driver) designed and made the first five-spoke mag wheels in about 1956 and it was he who founded American Racing. The first wheels were magnesium dragster wheels but street versions were available, I think, by about 1958-59. I have an old Rodder's Journal with the Palamides/American story and I'll go dig it up.

The shop that restored that particular set painted the spokes in their "special blend" silver. Here's what the wheels look like. (14x6 with a 225-70 T/A.) One of the great wheel designs of all time!

Not entirely true. While some Americans did indeed have the "goldish" cast finish, some definitely did not, and were natural silver in the spoke area. I have seen "NOS in the box" ones both ways. I think it may have to do with the specific year of manufacture. Also, some Torq Thrust copies from the same period, in which there there many, had darker charcoal colored spokes. I believe many A/P torq thrust wheels were factory finished this way.
BillD

That is great information on the spoke colors. I have a set (American TT D)with natural color (bare) spokes and did not know if they should be painted or left alone. I guess I leave them alone.

I agree Joey. Weren't the original 'Mag' wheels more of a gold color? As I recall, none of the American TTs were painted. They had a natural finish on the spokes, but some (maybe depending on the year of production) had the gold tint while others were gray. A guy here in town had a full set of 14 x 6s on his new '68 Fairlane and they were the gray finish. Mine (14 x 7s)are definitely in the '67 to '69 range but I honestly can't remember when I bought them.
I also had a set of Keystone copies. They had aluminum faces but were welded to steel rims. Those spokes were darker, and definitely painted. I ran those on a White '65 Impala. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Mickey Thompson Challenger wheel was introduced in '65, as cast

TJ,
The nose-up stance is because the engine is out being rebuilt. The chrome reverses on the front are just temporary rollers. The car had all 4 15x7 E-Ts. That's the way the original owner had it set up back in the '70s, blue drums and all. And you're right......he did have a set of cut-outs welded into the original front pipes. He later removed them and welded plates over the holes! The original head pipes/mufflers are still on the car. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

I keep waiting for someone to post something on a regional sole mag called "Marbec" that was made in the Dallas area back in the mid 60's. I am not positive about my spelling of this wheel but feel the name is very close.
Every time I was down there to visit my Mother who remaried and moved to FtWorth in '62. I went to the local drive-in's and saw them on many local cars often. Good looking wheels but the only thing wrong with them was you had to change the tires by hand back then. The centers were all one piece and not open and there was no "removable center cap".
This should ID them easy if anyone has come across a deep dish cromed spoked wheel ET styled. They were a deep dish 5 spoke mag. Never saw any without the deep dish. Anybody remember them?

TJ,
I have never seen any of the 3 ads you posted from the May '65 Hot Rod. I "must" have that magazine in my files. Going to search for it soon.
Yes, the Rader does look just like the M/Ts I have. Little is known. I suspect Mickey Thompson made an agreement with Rader for some rights to produce his own. The mold(s) was modified to include the "M/T 1965" inside the rear of one spoke and they suddenly became M/T mags. At least he did produce a plethora of his own center caps and spinners. In my opinion, his are much more pleasing than the Rader centers. I have quite a collection of the variety he offered, but the ones on the black '62 I call "curvies". I think they must have been mostly a Calif. thing (that more custom look) Honestly, I searched for 10 years to find those spinners, handing out "wanted" photos at every swap meet I went to. As it turned out, a very good friend of mine found a complete set at the Maple Grove Dragway swap meet for $20. a number of years ago and gave them to me. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

I laughed at that Verne! All I'm doing is scanning and posting old wheel ads but it has been fun as well as informative. My son (6 and a car nut) has been sitting on the living room floor going through Hot Rods with me. Beats the H*LL out of watching TV after dinner!
Another fun part of old Hot Rods are all the killer cars as well as famous rods, customs, and drag cars for sale in the Hot Rod Mart at the back of the magazines. It's enough to make you weep.

Hey guys having graduated high school in 1965 you'll have gone thru my childhood right here in this thread. There were so many wheels that I had forgot about that I want to thank everyone for keeping it going. And to all of those people that were lucky enough to have the money to actually own some of the wheels back in the sixties have pity on the ones of us that couldn't.

The factories got the message and one response to the aftermarket wheel craze was Mercury's 1964 Comet Cyclone wheelcover intended to look like a chromed stock wheel. If you look closely at the hub of the spinner you can see that the tapered edge is rather wide. This is the Rader style. Most spinners that M/T produced had a much narrower edge. Go to the M/T Rader wanted ad and compare to the pic of the wheel on my car. Just another dumb piece of trivia.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Also in the 10/57 issue was a feature on the then-dominant slingshot dragster campaigned by Emory Cook and Cliff Bedwell. The Cook & Bedwell car used Palamides magnesium wheels out back. Driver is Emory Cook, who showed Don Garlits how to modify Stromberg carbs for using nitro.

-------These Foresight wheels were all over the south Florida scene back in the day. The company must have gone after the Florida market very aggressively as I never saw them around very much anywhere else. The deep reverse often called for raised suspensions on both the front and rear, but everyone (including me) liked that look back then so nobody much cared about the loss of handling. Of course the "cool" guys all ran Bluestreak Goodyear dry racing tires on the street. Tires stuck out 3 inches or more were the norm. God forbid we ever run into a puddle!!!!!.......Bill S

I first saw a set of rough G/Ts at the Jefferson swap meet when I was 12. Finally came across a restorable set on Ebay and picked them up last year. These are composite construction (steel rim, Al center). Fit great on the car and clear the 4-piston calipers without a spacer.
This is a 27000 mile drag car that was fluffed in the mid-80s, so the tow tabs and Cragars are justified!

I just picked up a set of old Appliance Torq Thrust D copies and some American 200S wheels. Both need some clean up/restoration. Any tips that anyone can share on finishes both for the spokes and the rim edge? I prefer to do this myself since most of the restorers I have seen polish the rim edge and this is not the way they were new. Also, the cost of shipping the rims for restoration from the east coast to the west coast and back is pretty costly these days. Thanks for any help.

I have a set of vintage Ansen Sprint slot aluminum wheels that I am taking to the polisher this week. They are in very nice condition with only a few shallow scratches here and there. The coarse finish on the back of the wheel is very rough and dirty. How should this area be finished? What instructions, specifically, should I give to the polisher to get the best end product overall. And finally, what is the best way to preserve the polished wheel?
Thanks, http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Major problem on dings is galvanized backing ring prevents you from hammering out defect.

I picked up an old set of Torq Thrust D's in survivor condition. They do need a good cleaning but they do not need a restoration. The natural centers currently have a gold colored patina and the machined lips are a bit oxidized. I am looking for suggestions on how to gently clean the centers (without loosing the gold tint) and clean the lips of oxidation without giving the lips a polished look. Any suggestions?

Try warm soapy water and a semi stiff scrub brush to get into the pores of the wheels. I always start with the most mild applications first and step up the intensity if it is not working. Good luck!

Those are not mine. I posted on the H.A.M.B. site years ago about Cragar Sparklers and eventually someone did post pictures of those. He did state that he might sell them at some point. I am still waiting to see if that ever happens.

These are some 70's era 5 spoke 14x8 rims. I got them with the car in the trunk with center caps but no decals. I had some vintage american racing center decals made up for visuals but some people have said they could be Keystones.

Car looks great. Wheels seem like they could be 7" wide. How do you know they are 8's?
I looked over to AKH and seems like they could be US Indy wheels

This reminds me. I never took pictures of my NOS Kestone mags dated 1969. Nice Nova Jefferson. Any stories?
Cool Jed, didn't know you had a set. How were they identified?
Nova Jed

Identified? They were still in the original boxes with the heavy cast caps and screws. Non unilug too. Flat black centers with brushed outer rim. 15x7 if I remember correctly? I will take pictures and post this weekend.

No, those spinners in the pic were on them but they aren't the correct ones. I imagine Caps for International Dragmasters are pretty hard to find.

Need help identifying these wheels. I just picked them up from our local Craigslist, ad stated they came off a 67 vette.
There are no casting name son back side.

Wheels looks great! It will be hard for you to decide which ones to run when you're ready.
