Just wondering if this statement about identifying a true 1969 Chevelle SS Post car from an e-bay ad is accurate? I've never heard of this, but there's plenty I don't know...

"THE TRIM TAG READS: ST68 13427BAL233372 TR 57 57 AND MOST IMPORTANT THE NUMBERS 4A B L162420. THE L DESIGNATION HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED TO PROVE THAT THIS LETTER INDICATES THAT THIS WAS A SS CAR FOR TRIM DRILL PURPOSES AT THE BALTIMORE PLANT AND THE 420 IS ON THE IBM TRIM CARD THAT COMES WITH THE CAR."

I assume you are referring to this car (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=009&item=190012002362&rd =1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1) Blair.

There are a number of items in the description which concern me. Those being spelling and typing, number built, etc. Also, the quote about "collection" bothers me as I believe this owner just bought it this year.

I have about twenty other pictures on file from when it was for sale in Michigan last November. These will give a much better overview of the car than the pictures in the Ebay ad.

If you are serious about this car Blair, send me an email and I would be more than happy to provide some information, photos and an opinion.

Don,

That's the car. I'm not shopping, as I still have to finish the couple I have apart. But, I was curious about the ability to document a Post SS Chevelle from the cowl tag.

I thought the only sure way was a dealer invoice, buildsheet, POP or by having a DY or HO paint code?

The statement sounding so factual stirred my curiousity.

Thanks for the offer though. Don, you wouldn't have any 4346 carbs or 499 distributors you're looking to sell would you?

Don't take the "L" notation as a sure fire indicator for a Super Sport.
For 1970 at least, the Non Super Sport LS-3/330HP Big Block Chevelle/Elco & Monte Carlos have been found with this "L" too,as well as genuine Super Sports built at various other plants that don't have the "L" notation at all.
I believe it to denote more for a Big Block, more then I do the Super Sport option, but the jury is still out as to what it really stood for some 37 years ago.

I have to agree with Don. There are some issues, I could have bought it pretty cheap but was not convinced it was real. Sean

No problem Blair.

1) - As Rick mentioned, the "L" in the cowl tag does not in itself prove SS.
2) - No way to tell from the cowl tag or VIN if a 69 Post Sedan is an SS.
3) - It is very difficult to "clone" a 69 300 Deluxe model as an SS, unlike the simplicity of doing it to a Malibu. A certain item on the body should give it away every time. All the clones I have seen over the years do not have it.
4) - Sorry Blair, the only 4346 carb I have is on the car and I guess it's going to stay there. I run an aftermarket distributor and don't have a 499 unit - "GO FISH" http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I see the carbs on Ebay quite regularly and they are not cheap. Haven't seen a 499 for quite some time and they are very expensive. In time you will find them http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

At a local swap meet, I found a 498 (L34) distributor in a box with some other stuff. It cost all of $20. Could have just as easily been a 499 unit. It is working fine in our L78 car for now until the right one comes along. You just have to keep your eyes open. In time, like Don says. Being a Baltimore car and having the "L", are pretty good indicators, but buyer beware on any car.

Looks like ebay people have been reading Team Chevelle.
thats twice now that a 69 that is for sale has used the L on the cowl tag statement.
the other one was the dealer from New Jersey.

Yes Mike, looks like a fine example. That car went across the block at Mecum this spring. I believe it was bid into the $80's but did not meet reserve.

Why would a 1969 model year car have ST 68 on the cowl plate? Were all of the post 396/375 cars late 1968 cars? Does this mean that the cowl tag said the car was 1968 model and the window sticker or title said 1969? I am confused about this.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Andy, that's one of those "typing" mistakes I mentioned earlier.

Oh, okay, well that clarified that. I didn't think that chevrolet would be that bad off in their model year clarification.http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

The orange L78 belongs to me, and I am asking $130K, but would consider a true serious offer. If anyone has any questions about the car let me know. My number is 870-926-2018. I have tried to get the car in the best shape I can, without doing a fresh frame-off restoration. Don, It was nice to meet you earlier this year at the auction. It is always great to meet someone who is knowledgable about these cars, and is welling to answer questions. Thanks, Charles Lumpkin

Charles, I think you might have me confused with Dan Vasic who I believe was at that auction. But that's OK, I taught Dan everything he knows about the 69 300 SS Post Cars http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don, You are right. It was Dan that I meet at the auction. He is a very nice guy. Maybe we will meet at some event. It is always good to meet new knowledgable people.
Thanks, Charles

"...BALTIMORE PLANT AND THE 420 IS ON THE IBM TRIM CARD THAT COMES WITH THE CAR"

The "420" code he is referring to is the Inspection Sequence Number found on the IBM card and to my knowledge does not differentiate the car as a 300 post. This code should, however, match between the trim tag and the IBM card. What does differentiate it as a 300 post are the large font numbers (752 3427) typed perpendicular to all of the rest on the left side of the card. The 752 referring to one of the unique-to-300-Chevelle "taxi cab" interiors and the 3427 referring to the 300 post body with its unique characteristics as compared to a Malibu Chevelle.

Don....I beg the differ...Eh!

All you taught me was to say Eh and that Canadian beer is mighty good.

Charles....When you do meet Don in person...some day you`ll see for yourself that he is nothing like me....I`m taller and wider http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

I have seen Charles`s Monaco Orange Post many times and know it`s full history...I can say that the car has never looked so nice since Charles has owned it. Charles...I hope to see you and your Post Sedan at next years Chevel-Abration....by the way Don Lightfoot cannot make the event next year. So more beer for us to drink. I may even import lots of Canadian beer for the show...but oh that may change Don`s mind...and he`ll show up....hmmmm? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
