Just wondering if this statement about identifying a true 1969 Chevelle SS Post car from an e-bay ad is accurate? I've never heard of this, but there's plenty I don't know...
"THE TRIM TAG READS: ST68 13427BAL233372 TR 57 57 AND MOST IMPORTANT THE NUMBERS 4A B L162420. THE L DESIGNATION HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED TO PROVE THAT THIS LETTER INDICATES THAT THIS WAS A SS CAR FOR TRIM DRILL PURPOSES AT THE BALTIMORE PLANT AND THE 420 IS ON THE IBM TRIM CARD THAT COMES WITH THE CAR." I assume you are referring to this car Blair.
There are a number of items in the description which concern me. Those being spelling and typing, number built, etc. Also, the quote about "collection" bothers me as I believe this owner just bought it this year. I have about twenty other pictures on file from when it was for sale in Michigan last November. These will give a much better overview of the car than the pictures in the Ebay ad. If you are serious about this car Blair, send me an email and I would be more than happy to provide some information, photos and an opinion.

Don,
That's the car. I'm not shopping, as I still have to finish the couple I have apart. But, I was curious about the ability to document a Post SS Chevelle from the cowl tag. I thought the only sure way was a dealer invoice, buildsheet, POP or by having a DY or HO paint code? The statement sounding so factual stirred my curiousity. Thanks for the offer though. Don, you wouldn't have any 4346 carbs or 499 distributors you're looking to sell would you? Blair

Don't take the "L" notation as a sure fire indicator for a Super Sport.
For 1970 at least, the Non Super Sport LS-3/330HP Big Block Chevelle/Elco & Monte Carlos have been found with this "L" too,as well as genuine Super Sports built at various other plants that don't have the "L" notation at all. I believe it to denote more for a Big Block, more then I do the Super Sport option, but the jury is still out as to what it really stood for some 37 years ago. |

I have to agree with Don. There are some issues, I could have bought it pretty cheap but was not convinced it was real. Sean

No problem Blair.
1) - As Rick mentioned, the "L" in the cowl tag does not in itself prove SS. 2) - No way to tell from the cowl tag or VIN if a 69 Post Sedan is an SS. 3) - It is very difficult to "clone" a 69 300 Deluxe model as an SS, unlike the simplicity of doing it to a Malibu. A certain item on the body should give it away every time. All the clones I have seen over the years do not have it. 4) - Sorry Blair, the only 4346 carb I have is on the car and I guess it's going to stay there. I run an aftermarket distributor and don't have a 499 unit - "GO FISH" ![]() ![]() I see the carbs on Ebay quite regularly and they are not cheap. Haven't seen a 499 for quite some time and they are very expensive. In time you will find them ![]()

At a local swap meet, I found a 498 (L34) distributor in a box with some other stuff. It cost all of $20. Could have just as easily been a 499 unit. It is working fine in our L78 car for now until the right one comes along. You just have to keep your eyes open. In time, like Don says. Being a Baltimore car and having the "L", are pretty good indicators, but buyer beware on any car.
