yeah, everybody named Vinnie was stuffing a V8 into a Vega and painting it black. With those kits it was so easy, lots of them Kamback wagons (extra weight of rear glass for traction, HAH ). most of them wound up broken on the side of the road, driveshafts flying, rearends exploding. Motors tearing at the hood. You had to have to have big bucks to change the rear and get it narrowed. Some guys had full size rears hanging out the sides, what a site !! would be very nostalgic 1978ish. Wish I kept some of the stuff I had to tow back to the shop.

how old are those Vega ads? The prices are a wee bit low. The cars are very real, notice the bigger price on the worked rear. Gas it!

yes, the old Motion sign from the west wall. An unnamed individual anonomously contacted me a while back and offered it for sale. He never did respond to my question of how he came upon it. It is quite stunning set up in the living room though.

I thought I had it figured out Chris. I was the owner before him. I found the sign decaying in the back yard of a guy on L.I.
If you'd like me to fill in the blanks for you from the time it came off the wall, I can. Just contact me privately.
You seem to be a great guy with a serious interest (and history) in Motion cars. I'm glad it's with you. That's where it belongs!!! I have a lot of photos of it as it was recovered, before the previous owner spent a lot of time and money bringing it back to it's glory! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Just imagine......the only original remaining sign from MOTION! Is that http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif or what???? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

The sign sadly is not mine. (the price was $60,000.00) When I said they look great set up in the living room, that was the sellers living room, not mine. (I have a hard enough time leaving my Chevy High Performance magazine in the den.) I will try to find the old email from the seller (I would hope it was real and not one of those Ebay second chance scams). I did years back hear a story about the sign in a dumpster, by mistake of course, and when the alledged rightful owner came to claim it, it was too late. It then became the possesion of some lucky guy. I believe the seller said the metal case and plexiglass sign was in all original condition, just cleaned up. Still has Pink paint on the edges from when the building was painted. When I left the Baldwin area in the early 80's I thought the building was still yellow. I just passed the building yesterday and the east side has changed hands and paint again. Gone is the fluffy polish shop, now it looks like general auto maint.

Hi Chris

Sorry for the slow reply.

I got your email through a man who knows I'm selling this.
It's in my house now,and is 10 feet by 2 feet by 9 inches.
I am asking 12K.I bought it years ago and have it back to working condition only,no repaint or sanding and have left that alone.I have a letter from Joel authenticating it too.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/VerneFrantz/tn-47.jpg

The yellow piece of plexiglass behind the black arrow was replaced before I bought it. The rest is totally original. And I found the missing piece of the "T" in the back yard where I bought it!
It's history is not a secret. There's a thread buried somewhere here that explains the entire saga.

Hello
I own the original exterior MOTiON Sign Light Joel Rosen had made to advertise outside his shop from 1968-1999.
I want to sell it and was wondering if you would be interested in it?
It is 10 feet by 2 feet by 9 inches.weighs 120 lbs. and comes with a letter of authenticity from Joel Rosen himself.
I am asking $20,000.00 obo.
If this is something you are interested in,please let me know.
I can send you pictures as well if you give me your email
Thanks

On a serious note. It should be mentioned that the sign as it is today when thru a lot of hard work to get it back to working condition. Whether that justify that much of a markup is beyond me. But I would say it is fair to ask some sort of premium over the purchase price considering the amount of effort that went into restoring it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

look at what all the other kinds of old sighns go for these days...big money, I think the seller should ask a heck of alot more than 20 for a one and only item like this..just because some passed on it at 20 or what ever dont mean diddly.

If the sighn was displayed at a proper auction with the normal hype it would bring the money.

absolutly, no bootlegs.
I spoke to Joel about all the bogus Motion items on eBay a couple years back when he was still selling the original style Motion t-shirts. Oddly it didn't seem to bother him, very mellow. I don't know if the current partners would be as relaxed. I wonder how much of the old stuff (signs, logos) is trademarked or copyrighted. These guys on Ebay don't seem to have any fear in what they sell.
I myself do not have the space or the time for any new ventures, but am always looking to add to my classic T-shirt collection if they were made.

The Williams Chevrolet in Baldwin (formerly Baldwin Chevrolet) must've been very short lived. I remember Lyon Chevrolet in the early seventies until it closed. These were the names of the same single Chevrolet Dealership on Merrick Road in Baldwin. As far as the dealership in Jackson Heights is concerned I can not say if the two were ever connected.

Hey Chris...what about "Hasay Chevrolet"...know anything about that one? I owned a Cortez Silver '69 Chevelle, originally an L78/M40/4.10 combo, that had a build sheet from Hasay...car was beautiful with it's blue vinyl top & guts, and was original with only 30k miles on...the interesting part was, though, that it had a '69 512 block'd 427 in it, with a tired Motion sticker in the quarter glass...

I was *thinking* the Hasay on our buildsheet had a Long Island address? But I'll have to pull the folder and refresh my memory...but we called them at one time, and they said they had some old paperwork in the attic, but it was too hot in the attic and they'd check when it cooled off...never happened. We called several fall/winters in a row, and we still couldn't get them to check their stash...

What was Baldwin Chevrolet became Valley Stream Chevrolet soon there after. I don't recall that there was a dealer in between?

H.M. Williams Chevrolet, Dealer Zone Code 27-283 was in Corona, New York. (I am told the H might be for Hudstadt? )

The Vitar Copo 9561 Camaro race car we have for sale, was delivered to that dealer on March 18th 1969. The original owner said that he drove it 21 miles to his shop at 9226 Ave. D, Brooklyn, New York.

How accurate was his recollection after more than three decades?

P.S. I know of a very cool 1974 Vega which has a lot of Motion and Don Hardy parts on it, which was originally White on White I believe?

Chris: dug out my copy of the buildsheet, and that corner is torn...all I can make is...

HASAY [then a chunk is gone] INC
ROUTES [chunk gone]
SHIC [chunk gone again!]

So, I'd say your right on with the Shickshinny, PA, address...oh well, still a cool car, that I wish I had back!

Baldwin Chevrolet was never Valley Stream Chevrolet. Valley Stream Chevrolet still exists it is three towns to the west (in Valley Stream), also on Merrick Road. Baldwin Chev became Williams, (without initials) then Lyons Chevrolet until it closed. It is now a drug store or something. Ironically the neighborhood did not stay forgotten for too long as Joey Buttafucco's First Class Auto Body is just down the block.

The address I have for the Forest Hills Luby is 105-20 Queens Boulevard. I also have the Boston one in my list. I guess Luby was a popular name.

Thanks Rick, I'm hoping to learn a lot here. I'm only 18 so I am fairly new to the supercar stuff, but I have been working on SS427 Impalas all my life. I used to go by the Motion shop every sunday on the way to church so I guess that was when I started getting really interested in Motion. I have already learned a lot of interesting things about Motion on here and I am planning to do a 68 Biscayne "Street Sacers Special" recreation once I can find a nice body. It'll look just like the on in the 4/68 Hi-Perf Cars article. Great Site! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Tarrytown was where they built all fullsize Chevrolet up until they closed in several years ago. The plant was located a few miles north of the city along the Hudson I think it was one of the first if not the first plant to manufacture Chevrolets. We have a few 68 SS427 Impalas that were built at Tarrytown and sold on Long Island, one in Baldwin and the other in Riverhead.

Welcome to the site Steve. Just for the record, The Tarrytown, NY plant was Chevrolet's first assembly plant, opening for the 1912 model. Before that, the facility manufactured the Maxwell car. It closed just a couple years ago.

welcome steve, I thought I detected some Long Island in your accent. I see you posted a pic of your ride in the BaldwinMotion photo gallery, it is quite the cruiser, what can you tell us about that car?

That car is actually my dads. It has been in the family since 1978. He saw it in a Newsday ad and bought it from a kid in Seaford for $700! The car was a basketcase with bald tires and typical LI rust. The interesting thing was that it had a 68 Vette tri-power engine in it and the original 427 was upside down in a puddle of oil in the trunk, along with all the comfortron air parts. The trans and rear were original and he drove the car everyday until 1982. The kid he got it from said he bought it from a dentist, and he also said that the car was supposedly sold at Baldwin. The big mystery with this car is the hidden headlights, as everybody says they were only available on Caprice. Besides this car, we also saw one other Tarrytown 68 SS427, a custom coupe, in a PA junkyard, and that car had the hideaway setup. This car was also clearly untouched, and the junkyard owner said he got the car in 1973. I wonder if the paperwork for our car is still out there somewhere http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Anyways, the restoration was completed in 1995, and the car currently has just over 60000 miles on it. It is a great car and a blast to drive! I will get some additional pics posted. Also, if anybody on here has any 64 through 70 fullsize Chevies, my brother and I have a cowltag/vin number database. We get info from car tags, and also junkyard buildsheets and protecto plates from ebay, and we are up to about 6000 cars. We have learned alot about option codes and engine build dates in relation to body build dates, and the meanings of other misc codes on the cowl tags from doing this research. So if anybody has a car from these years, any info you could contribute would be greatly appreciated! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

What kind of stuff was it? I was corresponding with someone a few years ago who sent me some info from a few cars including a 67 SS427 invoice from a dealer called Horlacher & Sherwood Chevrolet in Montrose PA. Somebody had a bunch of invoices from this dealer, but I lost contact with the person. Was this you?

Yea, they exist, but the seller usually commands $500 each for them. So, unless you actually own the car, it's a bit steep!
