Ken,

What resort did you stay at....is this on the Negril, Montego Bay, or Runaway Bay?

I spent a vacation at the Negril a few years back....what great weather and scenery.

O.K..........The engine is finished,.......the Engine that was in the car when I bought it was a 454 block, 427 Crank,Oval Port Heads, and a Aluminum Rectangle Port #163 Manifold........Nice Combination.......Not!!
I bought a set of Rectangular Port Open Chamber Heads from Tom Williams (Wilmasboy) that were on a crate engine he put in one of his cars that he replaced with Aluminum heads..........( By the way....Tom owns enough cars to be Classified as a "Spoiled Brat" ...LOL)......these are the newer style heads that didn't have the pipe plugs in them.......I wanted the Stock appearance so I took them and had the Pipe Plugs put in for the Stock look......I know there are other things that are not exactly correct with the Engine, but "That's" O.K..........
Anyhow, we now have the Big Heads, the Block is Bored .060 and has Forged Pistons that give around 10.2 Compression, Balanced Rotating Assy, and a Crane "Blueprinted" L-72 camshaft.......Should make a "Sweet" street Motor........also got a Repro set of 827/828 Exhaust Manifolds from Chuck (427King)......the Manifolds need the parting line flash to be cleaned up a little, but except for the machined bosses where the bolts hold them to the head, they are Pretty close to Original

Well......An update, with all the snow and bad weather around here, the body shop that is painting the car is now backed up with collision work due to the weather......I should ?????? have the car back in 3-4 weeks......anyone see a pattern here....LOL.....Anyhow.......I'm just about out of things to do until the car comes back....I cleaned up the Exhaust manifolds and applied Calyx to them........The Intake was a mess so I Glass Beaded it and applied Eagle One Mag cleaner to it a couple of times after glass beading to get the Factory Skin look to it.....I should have taken a before and after pic, but heres a after one...After Glass Beading the Manifold appears a little too bright, the Mag cleaner is Sprayed on and it has a slight Acid Etch and bubbles like crazy.......after about 30 seconds you rinse with clean water....it takes a couple of applications to get a uniform finish, but when it dries off it has that Factory "Skin" look.......Here are some Pic's

Got some nice weather this weekend and since the Biscayne is still out for paint , I decided to tackle a project that has been on the back burner for a while....I had the Engine out of the 66 Chevelle Convert rebuilt (2nd time- Long Story) and it has been sitting in the garage for 6 months waiting.......I had a CE engine in the car and wanted to put the original back in......so it seemed like a good idea to also put in a 700 R4 at the same time.....here are some pic's.....this has nothing to do with the Biscayne thread.........But.........

Bruce is correct..............Calyx........Glass Bead the manifolds then rub on the Calyx Paste(It's like a Graphite and wax mix)......after they are coated you just take a rag and wipe the manifolds to even out the coating.......If they ever start to look bad you just smear some more on and they look new again...... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Just a little advice for anyone planning a "Future" Project.......Gather as many "Original" parts as you can......Because for all intents and purpose's......Most Reproduction parts as sold are basically....."JUNK".....The best Luck I've had is with the repro fuel and brake lines, they are usually "Pretty" good......but...It seem's like the rest of the stuff available is about 50-50 .......It seems the business's that sell this stuff just don't care..I just have a problem paying for something and then when it's not correct or does'nt fit, being told that "You're the first one to ever have a problem".......My customers hold my feet to the fire everyday in regards to the "Quality" of the product's we produce on a daily basis and it just "Irk's" me that these guy's don't have a Clue nor do they care........Just "Venting".....but , it's a problem because "WE" allow it to happen http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Ken,
We hear you loud and clear on this one. I have been dealing with this for over 20 years and have worked very closely with some of the manufactures. I constantly ask, why when you are paying a designer to sit at a drafting table making the part while using an NOS original part to draw and measure from do you cut corners. It would have cost you NOTHING more to do it right the first time. Most of the things they scimped on were petty at best and there was absolutely no reason NOT to do it right the first time. I am constantly told the same thing you were, "you are the only one who has complained!" http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif I am not new to manufacturing processes and things like gas tanks, weatherstriping, door handles, carpet, emblems, decals, exhaust hangers, wiring harnesses, inner fenders, etc, etc, would have cost NO more to do them right the first time around. I boggles my mind but only a select few have changed their tooling and gotten better. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

This could start a whole discussion in itself. IF every reproduction part were dead-nutz correct, then we might have certain factions trying to present those parts as NOS! I'll fall back to the Build Sheet issue. When something IS reproduced authentically, then we cry about the possibility of misrepresentation. Not taking issue with anyone here; just looking at both sides of the coin. Something of a double-edged sword. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Don't get irked at just the reproduction Companies.
GM-Ford-Chrysler today license their name to go onto some parts that are nowhere near what the used to produce in quality & design years ago.Yet buyers see that familiar logo on a parts packaging and immediately assume it's worthy of their car.
I'm seeing more & more 30+ yearold rusted hulks being bought today as a whole, just to acquire it's proper fitting/detailed rusted parts for another restoration.

Taking the body off that car would be a walk in the park (2 hours tops) and does not require a lot of room. A 9' ceiling would be enough along with some 55 gallon drums. I wish I were closer I would give you a hand as it would be great to see it completely restored and for a very inexpensive cost of parts.

I'm going to be down your way at the end of May and might just have to bring my camera to take shots of your garage. There is a post-it-note on the rear glass of a certain Chevrolet in there (at least rumor has it that it is in there somewhere http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif ) as that was a classic note when I viewed it last time.

Classic as in it made me laugh.

Keep in mind, this was attached to the rear window glass (which was about all that was visable), "clean garage and locate car." I am going by memory but it read something like that. Very cute! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

I will be down there in his neck of the woods at the end of next month and will take before and after photos of his garage. We can do it DC, a little beer and a dumpster and we are in business. Last fall I went down there and helped someone else clean her garage out. It only took three days so four should about cover this one. Never know what we might find in there. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

This is the kind of stuff that makes working on cars a pain in the a$$........I bought the door seals from Soft Seal....never had a problem in the past.....Installed the Driver side seal after spending a 1/2 hour figuring out which seal was for which door (rh-lh) and then the starting position to get the pins to line up with the holes in the door.......they have a Red starting pin in the seal....but no directions as to where that pin go's to start the assembly.......finally figured it out (actually.....I asked my wife cause she know's everything).......after installing the seal .....I "TRIED" to close the door.......No way is that door going to close...........got online and ordered the Steele gaskets......hopefully they will fit better...It just amazes me that they get away with selling something that isn't even close......I can't even close the door enough by forcing it to get it to the second latching position.........Anyone else have any advice.....can't find NOS seals........SoftSeal vs Steele????

Looking Great....I too had problems with Soft Seal.....I have never gone back ever since I switched over to Steele Rubber Products. How ever NOS rubber is always the first
choice. I can still find NOS rubber for Chevelle Post Sedans...so I`m sure you can still find an NOS pair for your car. I`ll keep my eye open for you.

Got the Steele Rubber Door seals in today and put them on.........No comparison between the seals ....these things "Fit".....they have the little metal screw tab as do the factory seals and they came with instructions that were very clear......even the Trunk Seals have a detailed Instruction sheet showing the correct way to Install the seals........How many times have you gone to a show and noticed the trunk seals installed incorrectly......all it takes it a little piece of paper to show the First timer......Thumbs Up to Steele for a Quality product

It still amazes me today with our technology and demands that so many of the suppliers make junk. Little details are missed as are huge ones. I say it over and over again, you are paying a tool and die designer to sit there at a drafting table to design the tooling to make the part. It takes no more effort or money to do it EXACT the first time instead of half ass especially when they normally have an NOS part right in front of them to take measurements from. I am always told the same thing, "you are the only one that has complained". http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif The resto parts business is in the billions, why can't they make them correct?

Looking good Ken, you are almost there. Just last night going through this thread I asked myself why (I) did not buy that 396 4-speed Biscayne I posted instead of letting someone else have it. Brian........As you and Joe know and I am finding out....Again.......Original NOS parts are the ""ONLY" way to go for a true restoration.....unfortunately, sometimes the repro route is the only option.......Like Rick said earlier......Most of these guy's that are in the Repro business are in it for one thing only....$$$$$$$$.......and the people in the Sales end of it, have no choice to sell this "Crap"..........Taiwan, China, all "JUNK" or substandard product..........I bought some Repro Window cranks for my Chevelle 4 years ago, looked beautiful......put them on and the Spline portion was too deep into the handle and didn't engage the window crank.....just quite didn't engage.....so you had to push in on the handle to get it to work.....took them off and sent them back and was told "AGAIN" that I was the only one to complain........bought some more 4 years later for a different car and guess what.......Yep!!........you would think that someone would have figured this out by now and corrected this problem........In addition to the Substand product......these guy's that continue to sell this "Junk" have no concerns about giving value for money....Guy's this is a "PROBLEM" that alway's get's swept under the Rug and is a problem that no one wants to address......Why??......

Had the Headliner put in yesterday......first I had to get Windlace made as the "Factory Stock" Windlace I was sold(Twice ....and have the bills to prove it ...LOL)was non useable (colors not even close)....any how, I've given up on trying to deal with C.A.R.S. on getting what I need.....they shown the right stuff in their catalog, but it's not what they sent me and I can't wait another 10 weeks for them, so I sent the seats out to a local shop for recovering.........Why is this so hard.......I just don't get it.....It's not "Brain Surgery"......Anyhow....got the headliner in and installed the Door Panels (Just Dashes did a great job, except the retention nails they pre-installed were in position on one side and way off on the other????), Installed the window mouldings, started to install the carpeting and found that there is major trimming to be done to get it to fit.......better more than not enough I guess.....got the Radio installed and put a set of repro-correct kick panel speakers and a set of rear package tray going in also...."Still waiting for the Radiator" 11 weeks and counting.......the Radiator that came with the car was good until I forgot it was under the Lift and when I lower it the Radiator got Downsized........Darn....Don't you hate when that happens.......Anyhow....here are some latest pic's

Hi Ken:
I know you don't mind the feedback so I will comment based on what I remember from owning 3 66 biscaynes all with the fawn interior.None of the combinations you posted are correct.I don't know Gary's car but from what I see it is 65 door panels and 65 seat color combinations.
The new covers you have I have seen in 66 with more of a bronze interior not fawn.
Like this one.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h215/JoesCars/bis2.jpg

The 66 fawn ones the top was the same color as the top of your door panels. Not a very good picture but you can see enough to see the top of the seat matches the top of the door panels. Not sure if I helped or caused you more headaches. I would research it further but I think you will find gary's combo is 65.
Take care Joe

Joe, I believe your picture and what Ken got are Belair interiors. I think Biscaynes are different.

Hello, That seat cover Ken got is 1966 Biscayne....cloth pattern matches my original. I do agree the color at the top of the cover is wrong though. Mine is blue and the top of the seat covers matches the top of the door panels...Just my experience with my 66........
