At this moment 40 years ago, I drove away from Bob Eriksen Chevy, Milan, Illinois thinking, life doesn’t get better than this! I remember massaging the chrome shifter knob and listening to “Son of a preacher man” by Dusty Springfield! KSTT 1170 am Davenport, Iowa and WLS 890 am Chicago were belting out the hits one after another. I drove home only to quickly shower anticipating good times are lying ahead of me tonight. 300 miles, $12.50 in gas, $3.00 at Deb’s Drive Inn for pit stops to buy cheese burgers and cherry cokes, one police officer writing a ticket, and a very long night, it was bed time for the Chevyman finally at 2:00 am! I met lots of new people that night other than the cop of course. The next morning Saturday the 9th was another new experience. ( refer to page 11 post titled “Low RPM Story”. Times were simple, like me, and lots of fun to be had all around our great hobby and the love of the automobile. Life has been good to me and I have experienced many blessings with family and all, but as far as the car thing I have never anticipated something so much as I have with the up coming car show. I have never attended an all Chevy Show or been to one with so many cars under one roof. Then add a special collection of my all time favorite model. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you guys in the Z Showcase as well. I am extremely appreciative of Dean Davis, Mike Piecyk, Darren Costello, and Bob Ashton for the tremendous invitation, helping with the prep, and hospitality that they have shown me! Happy Birthday Z, thanks for the ride all the way to the ChevyVetteFest November 2008!

Well Dan I am looking forward to meeting you. An amazing story you have. Nothing better than hashing out the old days standing in front of the very car that got you through them! The picture in the snow is the best ever. I remember the first thing I did was take those poverty caps off my 69 SS nova when I got it home. They were on the car all of about 10 miles. I bet when you drive your car in 2008 the excitement level is still the same as that cold November day when you picked your Z up! You and Schoenthaler with your original owner cars are really neat stories. VF will be an all time high this Fall for me. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Well Mr. sc69sam thank you and be sure to seek me out when you get to the show. I want to put faces with all of these names. I just went outside and the weather is exactly the way it was that day 40 years ago, upper 30's and windy. I would love to go for a ride to reminisce but like back then it still doesn't start under 45 degrees. The picture that was posted earlier today was taken on January 1, 1969.

When ever I see that Nickey logo, I think of the time that I picked up friends at Northern and headed to the Windy. I had always heard of Nickey but being from the sticks I had no idea where it was. So I asked one of the girls if she could take us by that dealership on the way in to the State Theater. When I pulled onto the lot I thought I died and gone to heaven. At home we had such small selections of cars but there every color Z with all hoods and spoilers and some with JL8s. By then the second or third series of cars were out and mine was like a stripo special. WLS advertised heavy for them between music.

Stefano
11-09-2008, 05:18 AM
That is very cool info, Dan. It would be great to find one of those Nickey JL8 Z28s.

Chevyman
11-09-2008, 05:30 AM
One listed for like $4500 as I recall not sure. Loaded RS Vinyl top, tilt, 8 track, hounds tooth and more. I remember being so shocked that a car could cost that much! Mine was a basic jane that listed for $3854.70. That RPO JL8 cost like $500.00 alone!

Congratulations on preserving a true piece of Chevy Musclecar History. I can't wait to see it, along with all of the others.

The Bait and Switch Story

After purchasing my new 1969 Z/28 Camaro at 5:00 PM on a friday night, I immediately headed over to the Davenport,Iowa One Ways. Muscle Cars would drive around for hours east on 3rd avenue, north one block, then west on 4th avenue, south one block, back east on 3rd avenue and do it over and over again. There were four lanes wide and usually ten deep at any given time. I was no different, over my long driving career of two years, I spent most of my time cruising and talking with the guys about cars, and cruising and talking with the girls trying to hook one in. But there was something about driving dad’s car or driving a rat that discouraged the babes to join forces with me for a cruise. That is until I bought the gaudiest and loudest Camaro in town! Burgundy with red stripes got it done! The chambered exhaust didn’t hurt either! The girls were engaging in cat fights for a ride in the badest Z around. Well one night I struck up a conversation with a cute babe and after awhile we decided to go out the next night. I had quizzed her a bit about was it the car or did she really want to be seen with me alone. She assured me “oh no I really want to go out with you the car has nothing to do with it”. The next morning I was telling my friend Greg McKenzie about the deal, and I asked him if he would like to borrow my car to take out his girl Christine and I would use his 1937 Chevy 4 door to take out my date. He naturally agreed and so it was that evening I arrived at my date’s house that I hit the binders and went sailing on by for about four car lengths do to the bad brakes. I looked up at the house and I saw her mother looking out the window rather anxiously wandering what was going on. I backed up and went up to the door and the chickadee met me with “what’s that?’ We talked for a bit and soon I was on my way to Deb’s Drive Inn alone with a very limited agenda for the night. I was telling my folks years later about that night and my Mom said “that’s ok Danny, girls like that are very shallow!” I didn’t bother telling Mom about the many other dates that worked out much better than that one did.

I am very excited to announce the final edition to the display. I will be bringing what might be the 1st Z28 off the line. VIN #3. For all the true Z enthusiasts this car will be something to see. It is currently unrestored and for the most part is just the shell and doors. However, this is the best way to see all the unique parts on this car including the signatures of the engine and body builders as found on the roof under the headliner. It has very early cast parts with it and some of them are hand stamped. It even has the original block! The car is gold with white interior. If anyone has any info or remembers the car speak up. Maybe this car was on the auto show circuit? It has already been acknowledged by Jim Mattison as being built on the pilot line in Michigan. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Amen. As we have seen, the Showcases are a viable part of every VetteFest and have continued to grow each year. I am sure Darren, Brian, Dan, Tom, myself and others will agree, it could not have been done without the cooperation of the membership. Many participants have gone to great lengths and costs to see to it that they helped each of us with our individual showcases and it shows every year. It was a tremendous amount of work but one that has paid dividends in new found friendships and cars as well as bringing more publicity to the cars and the club. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Nice Dru. I've been thrown under buses before, but, this is a new low. Can't wait to see it with that Nu Finish shine. Just run it through 52 car washes & it'll be back to normal.

Good luck to all those participating in the show and a special thanks for bringing these cars out for the public to see. The average spectator has no idea the time and expense each of you go thru to share these cars with the public. My hats off to all of you..

John, that's true, it's a lot of work and it does get expensive toting these things all over the country............... but most of these folks do it for the love of the hobby and to hang out with friends they only get to see a couple of times a year. And the majority of these folks bring the cars for display only; no trophies, no cash prizes, just good old FUN.
Believe me when I speak for MANY folks on this site,........... IT'S WORTH THE EFFORT!
There are some fantastic people on this site, and one of the best things about them is:............... the EGOS are checked at the door! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif
