Since I don't think it is ever too early to get the ball rolling, I am excited to announce another neat Special Showcase for the next Nickey Chicago Chevy Vettefest, November 22-23, 2008.
Our own DarrenX33 has agreed to put together a very special collection of 1969 Camaro Z/28's.
The goal is to have one of each of the colors that were offered in 69 and I am happy to announce that Darren has already lined up more then 10 through the incredible support of the sYc. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
I will let Darren take it from here to announce some of what he has in store for us, but suffice it say, this will be another incredible collection of real-deal documented Musclecars.
Once again, my hat is off to the sYc Comunity, who constantly help me in my quest to continue to "raise the bar" to produce the finest All Indoor All Chevy Show and Swap Meet in the world! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Ok, thanks much guys for the compliments. This is going to be a great event. I am hoping we can pull this off and get every color. I know its going to be a challenge but I think with the help of everyone here we can fill in the rest of the cars and get it done. With the help of many others I have 12 of 18 colors accounted for so far. I will post a complete list of what I have so far shortly. We have a few cars undergoing resto right now so the timer is counting down in for instance, Homer. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
What I can say right now is what colors have yet to be accounted for. And as you can imagine, these are the tough ones. So if anyone has or can find someone with a real deal example in the following colors we'll be complete. Because we are trying for one of each, in the event I get more that one color signed up the 2nd car would be on a back up list. Level of commitment will play in there as well. I hope not to upset anyone with this method of selection but I really think if we can pull this off it will be really something. Has it been done yet since Norwood? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I'm gonna' wing it here, but I think the Burgandy Z was about 7 to 8 years ago. I think the car was a spoilerless car with a spoiler on the front. I'm thinking VE3 for some reason and a ZL2 hood. One of the more memorable cars at the show for me that year. It just looked nice in that color..BKH

Champagne will be a problem. I know of only one Z in that color and it was in primer on ebay a while back.
Glad you found a butternut yellow car. Very few Z's in that color. That's the toughest color (that actually has cars in that color) for that exhibit.
Glacier Blue will require some digging, but they are around. About the same # of those as burgundy Z's.
Cortez silver Z's - they made a bunch, just have to find an owner.

Burgundy Z's got Red stripes Automatically, the only color to get red ones...
That sounds right,be it a burgundy hardtop or black V/top Z/28.
If it came with a parchment vinyl or convertible top-(non Z/28 here of course),it would've received white stripes then.

In 40 years that's the first time I ever heard that red stripes are the norm. "Oh you painted those on that there car, white is correct" is what I usually hear. Even Jerry M. doubted the legitimacy. The car next to it on the new car lot at the time was lemans blue with white stripes. I'm still glad that I bought this one!

On non Z cars D91 Band stripe, D96 Pin Stripe, and DX1 Sport Stripe (Hockey Stick) red is the standard color. The dealer order guide maintains that only black or white stripes are available for the RPO Z28 special performance equipment. This is why Jerry M. demands specific paperwork showing that my car came from Norwood with this color combo, in order to put it in his book, which I have none. I had ordered a Dusk Blue Rally in late Sept. At about the first of Nov. I would go by the dealership everyday after work (4:25pm) to see if it came in. On Nov. 7 there appeared for the first time my burg. car and a lemans blue as I made my daily pass. I looked around to see if perhaps my Dusk Blue came in with these, but Danny Miller, the detail man, said no only these came in this morning, they were serviced, he washed them and put them both on the lot by 2:30pm. This is why I know that the dealer did not special paint the car like I am accused of for 40 years. The other reason that I know that the dealer did not paint the red stripes is because when a friend backed into the nose of the car, the dealership body shop manager scratched his head and butt for a day trying to figure out how to match the stripe color! Had he painted those stripes on the car he probably would have known the proper paint mix is my point. Anyway I went in to check on my ordered car and the sales manager said he had no production date for my car yet. I asked if I could take the Burgandy one since I was an impatient 18 year old punk. He said yes and I told him that I would be in the next night with my co-signor (Dad) to pick up the car. So the next night Nov. 8 at 5:00pm I drove away thinking life doesn't get better than this. At 8:00 I was getting my first ticket on the Davenport, Ia. one ways! I drove 332 miles the first night and never left town. I filled up three times with sunoco 34cent gas for a total of $12.80 and got home at about 2:30 am on the 9th. The paperwork is dated for sat. Nov. 9th because the girls had already gone home on friday. I'm sorry that at my age I can no longer remember details, so if anyone asks specific questions I may not be able to answer.

Davenport cops didn't have a great deal of patience, especially with folks from the "other side" of the river. Was Danny Miller one of the owners of the Millers a go go 66 chevelle that used to run the streets back then?

That sounds right,be it a burgundy hardtop or black V/top Z/28.
If it came with a parchment vinyl or convertible top-(non Z/28 here of course),it would've received white stripes then.

Just an FYI- There is the Burgundy Z w/JL8 unrestored that has no vinyl top, white interior and white stripes. It was featured in the MacNeish book. So that theory isn't quite accurate.

You guys might be getting tired of me after last night, however some may be interested in more details of Nov, 8, 1968. So like I was saying there was a lemans blue with white stripes sitting next to the burgandy car. It had an euro bumper and a front mounted antenna. Dealers did little mixes of options just to keep it interesting. D80s were on stop thats why my Dusk Blue hadn't come in yet and since I was growing impatient, I bought the burg. Since the burg. has a rear mount antenna I doubt if a D80 would even be available. There was a tremendous price increase over 68's and dealers felt the need to keep them as cheap as posible. Mine listed for $3854.70 and it is really basic. No tint even. The dumb thing the dealer did was ordering the standard gear with M21. I have to ride the clutch 200 feet just to get it going from a dead stop! 4.56s is actually the best fit for a M21. I see why the second series of Zs came with 8K tachs. I wind the needle half way around again going to 2nd. One Friday night coming out of Debs Drive Inn I powered 2nd at who knows what 8K, 85k I havn't a clue, kaboom the clutch exploded and fortunatly it went down instead of up and there was debris flying around scooting down the street in front of me. The explosion sheered the imput shaft off flush at the tranny even. The case wasn't hurt so I still have the vin on the side of the case. The dealer was only 2 blocks away so we pushed it down in front of the service doors, by Monday morning there must have been 15 Muscle cars sitting in front with simular problems. Factory defects were real common back then!!!!

That Burgundy/Red is a wacky looking combo...I like it because it's an oddball, but it seems strange they thought that was an OK color for red stripes, yet you couldn't get red Z/28 stripes on a black or white Z with red guts, or on Cortez Silver, or...

I have to add just one more thing for Joe Barr. Almost any combination was available. Like an Impala Wagon with a 427 4spd. I remember a blue C10 with a red interior. I had a friend that ordered a 64 Chevelle SS loaded with a 230 six cylinder in it! Everybody loved buckets but a few ordered bench seats with 4spds and now they are loved. From the time I was 10 years old I went to the show room every fall to get one of every sales brochure and of course I still have them all.

Did Dale Ellicott own the car before you?

05-31-2008, 01:06 PM
His name is actually Dale Elliott, there was a misprint in the book. Dale sold the car to Roland C. who owned it for 3 or more years and never titled it in his name and then I bought it. Dale lives 60 miles from me and told me the interesting story when he bought the car in 1972 from his best friend. Dale tried to buy the car new at Thomas Chevrolet, but his father would not let him, he recalls 2 JL8 cars in the showroom at the time. Dale's friend bought the car and Dale ordered a new 70 Chevelle SS and eventually left his friend drive the Chevelle and he fell in love with the Chevelle so Dale traded his Chevelle and $200 for the Z/28 in 1972. Car still shows 29k original miles.

06-01-2008, 12:24 AM
Yes the records are gone. I remember the day that the office girls dumped the records in the dumpster in August of 1976. Here's why I remember that day. Ken Scheiss and I were salesmen there and we were walking across the lot on a very windy day. We were out checking the inventory when suddenly a piece of paper blew to Ken and wrapped itself around his foot. Here's where everybody is going to call me a liar, But we have witnesses. He reaches down to pick it up and low and behold it was an invoice billed to him for a 71 vega that HE bought new!!!! We walked over to the dumpster and saw dozens of cardboard file boxes in there. The girls got mad at us for not helping them but we were still in shock. That incident was the talk of many a sales meeting after that. We always tried to figure out if it had some strange preminition. This is the honest truth or my name isn't Dan the Chevyman.

Did you ever see the Yenko deuce that went through Ericksen's, or the 68 Yenko that went through Mills? I've always been puzzled why there were apparently no COPO cars sold from any Quad cities dealerships. Mills, and Ericksens were plugged in well enough that they had to know they were out there. And they knew what Fred Gibb had in LaHarpe.Stealy told us that they had a 68 Gibb car go through there real quick after the owner may have gotten into some trouble on he Ia. side. Though it went out around Kewanee. He couldn't recall this red nova we have here, but he said that was a long time ago, and I know a lot of hipo cars went through Mills.

I would love to go back for just one day! I started selling at Mills in Feb. '74 and the management seemed so old. They never told me any stories of the 60s. Terry Seams is still there, started in '68 I think. That's unheard of in the car business. George McClain was the General Manager and he told me stories about Bob Eriksen and He drag racing the '57 demostrators. Bob Eriksen got fired from there and went to Milan, IL. and bought out Ralph Palmer Chev.

OK you asked! Well it's Saturday morning Nov. 9, 1968 and I had a major problem on my hands. No, I didn't have to work, no my girl friend wasn't late, and no I didn't loose my Beach Boy Albums. The night before I drove over three hundred miles and couldn't wind it past 5500RPM. This was disgraceful and embarassing! After all I had been reading all the magazines about the testing that they had been doing and constantly they talked about 7500-8500RPM. The talk of the day was about the mouse that roars! 800cfm holleys, 2.02 valves, 11 to 1 compression, solid lifter 30/30 cam, and all the rest. Did I own the only 302 pony car in the nation that peaks out at 5500 ? Man I was wreck trying to figure this out. It was pouring rain without any let up, but I was determined to come up with a solution. At wits end I decided it was time to go visit Lee Parks owner of Chevron Speed Shop across the river in Davenport, Ia. When I arrived it was still pouring rain. I went in and explained my major malfunction to Lee and he began to quiz me with all of the usual potential problems. Finally he says let's try something, Chevyman. He suggests that I go out, not him, get the distributor and bring it in. Well after driving clunks for couple of years, I always carried tools with me. Still pouring rain I grab my 9/16 box end that I still have with my other keepsakes for the car, and remove the distributor. I handed it to Lee and he sticks it in his Sun machine. Soon he has it spinning and he asks "did you say it is done at 5500RPM?" Yep. He comes back with "delco points have a very weak spring and what you have is point float." So he sticks in some Mallory Points and heavier weights and lighter advance springs and suggests that I go give it a whirl. Back out in the rain I go. I throw the distributor in the hole, time it close enough by ear, tighten in down, and jump behind the wheel. I was soaked but I had plenty of napkins from Debs Drive Inn from the night before, so I started towelling off. Now it was time for the show. I backed out of the lot onto the street while still coasting backward just ever so slightly, I jammed the Hurst forward into first and dumped the clutch. It roared with tremendous power, I hit all four gears at 7500RPM and only traveled 20 feet. I hit the binders, backed up 15 feet, drove back into the lot, and went in to ask Lee how much do I owe? "That will be $10.00 please." I left the building with a wide grin.

Lee was a pretty cool guy. That place used to be a mad house. The Doug Thorely headers, and super muffs I ran on my deuce came from there. Arnie Beswick used to bring in uncut aluminum heads and have them cut the way he wanted there.

Why did you add bumper guards on the rear but not the front? Why would you go to all of the trouble of installing a Hurst and not put in the Competition Plus? Or the best one is "What did you do with the bubble hood?" or "I know for a fact that all '69 Zs came with spoilers!" I tell those guys, you know, you're absolutely right, and walk away. Well alright then!
The vibration story.
I remember it was early Dec.1968 when my friend Mark Collins and I pulled out of Debs Drive Inn and headed south on Rt. 67. We were going home early since it was a work night and things around town were pretty slow. It was a typical cold December night at about 9:00. We decided to take the long way home which would add about three miles to the journey, near Milan, IL. Rt. 67 is a 4 lane divided highway, with a very wide grassy median. As soon as we were well out in the country side, I bore down on the excelerator. The road makes easy twist and turns and mild dips and rises, so 7000 rpm in forth gear is easy enough. I can only estimate at that rpm we were probably cruising at what? 145mph, who knows! Suddenly the most bizarre thing happened I have ever witnessed. A vibration came over the car like I have had never felt on any car. I have lost fan blades but that was like child's play compared to this! I can only describe the feeling as though I was driving over those very high speed bar bumps that are in school parking lots. Only it felt like they were only 10 feet apart! I wear contact lenses and it was like my eye balls were jumping up and down inside of the lenses! What made matters worsen was the fact that the windshield fogged over. I glanced over at Mark and he grabbed the “chicken bar” and stiffened up like he was having a heart attack! From the glow of the dash lights I could tell he was as white as a ghost! Now remember that I told you earlier that the road made minor twist and turns. I was driving totally blind at well over 100 mph. If only I had attended the driving school for the blind, I would have been ok. But there were no braille bumps so what was I to do? Because I knew the road so well I made very gradual turns and started slowing down. It was at this point that I decided to turn off the motor to see if the vibration would stop. Bingo! I rolled down the window to steer the Z to the shoulder, fighting the bitter cold, and cruised to a stop on the shoulder. Mark jumped out and immediately took a piss in the ditch. I always carried basic tools in the car including a flashlight. I popped the hood and saw coolant everywhere. By now everyone has probably guessed the problem. I’m not sure if factory cars were ever meant to run at long periods of high rpm. I noticed that the fan was at an angle, but the belt was still on by some miracle. What had happened was that the front bearing in the water pump gave up and the vibration came from the wobbling of the pump shaft. I saw that I was close to my favorite cousin’s house, so we walked over to see her . She’s a real babe and I just wanted to check her out. I rang the door bell, but no one came to the door. They must have thought that there was a pervert at the door at that hour so they never answered. (Maybe they knew that it was me at the door!) Anyway we walked back to the car and I removed the belt and drove home. Over the years I have put more water pumps on that car than anything else. I had a Ford lover one time say to me, “ Those 302 Chevys are always blowing heads and water fly's everywhere.” I have never known of a head problem, but lots of water pump problems for sure. He must have gotten confused since he was just an uneducated ford man! This story is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, or my name isn’t Dan the Chevyman! Trust me on my honor as a used car salesman.

Yes you're right. I could not figure out those ford guys. It would have been a lot easier to just by a Chevy, than to spend all that time and money on trying to get out of the16 second range! Fortunely the warranty took care of me again, must have been another factory flaw. After the 5th time that I had warranty work done in 2 months they started to question me when I came into the service department. I think they were dreading the 5 years, 50,000 miles that still were lying ahead!

For those of you who may travel North through South through the Quad cities to Monmouth, and or Laharpe, you've traveled over the patch of 67 he talks about.
A friend of mine was doing kinda the same thing with his 69 Z while under the influence. He mistakenly though he was in a lower gear, and dropped into 2nd from 4th. They saved one head, and the intake. Looked like a grenade went off in the block. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

It's so nice to have some verification to my stories. Since you are somewhat familar to the location, the vibration story took place in front of the Oaks Restaurant, 2 miles south of the Memri Drive In on route 67. The next story will take place on Knoxville Road east of the Memri 2 miles. I have to include a picture with this story, so Mike or Darren will have to coach me on that one. I'll save that story for next month.

That is the worst vibration in the world... it happened to the NOS waterpump on the black 69 RS/Z when we drove the car from the lot after the Camaro Nats last year... I thought it was driveline related... but when you pushed in the clutch and the motor idled it would all but go away...

It was great to spend a few minutes with Darren this weekend at the Bloomington Survivor show.
I always worry about whether we can continue to host truly amazing Special Showcase displays at CVF. I am here to say that once again, with what Darren has and what Brian is doing with the Performance Nova Showcase, Chevy Vettefest will once again be the Must See event of November.
With a lofty goal and the desire to create something truly special, Darren (and the sYc membership) have managed to assemble an amazing and unique group of Z's that to my knowledge, has never happened before under one roof.
On that note...I'll let him elaborate!
Once again, my heartfelt THANKS to all things sYc.

OK, I'm in. I've got to see all of these colors in one place. I'm tacking on a trip to Chicago to our Thanksgiving plans.
For the record, has anyone ever SEEN a Champagne '69 Z? I've talked to a few people who have owned many Z's over the years, and they've never even heard of one (although to be fair, if there were any, they were probably painted black or root beer brown by 1975). I'll be mightily impressed if you find one.
If not, how about getting black top/black stripe versions of HO and LB along with white stripe ones? Is that asking too much?

Hey Guys! Saturday September 6th is the day of our Car Show here in Geneseo, ILLinois. Our town is right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. Anyone driving their car to the show will get a large pizza free from the greatest pizzaria "Danny Boys." I personnally can attest to it being great. Geneseo is located about 140 miles from Ohara Airport. Exit 19 I 80. I will be passing out the flyer like the one in the magazine for the ChevyVettefest show in November to promote it here locally. I know this is a late notice but I would love to have some of you show up! Darren, thank you very much! Email me for more info.

I think this Frost Green car might have sold off-auction. But if its staying in the midwest, maybe you could get a hold of the new owner via the last one who listed the auction? A friend of mine has seen the car, he says its pretty nice. Also remembers years ago when he turned it down for $16K. "Nobody would pay that for a green one back then".

I sold it a few years back after parting it out and, believe it or not, it has been restored...and it looks beautiful. I would assume it had to have been rebodied...it was a real mess! The new owner contacted me last week and is sending pics of the resto. I am curious to see all of the pics to determine what really was done to resurrect "The Turd".
