What are the main differences between the two? Are they interchangeable?

The Y77 had 3/8" & 5/16" side terminals along w/a 45 amp hour rating and 2300 cold cranking watts and weighed 34lbs.
The Y89 had both 3/8" side terminals along w/a 61 ahr,and 2600 ccw. and weighed 44lbs.

The Y89 is a little larger, but will fit in the same tray.
They both had std. terminal positions, but you're gonna have to adapt a battery cable post to accomadate one or the other.

So what was the Delco replacement for the Y77? The must have kept producing it after the 69 model year?

I think the the Y77 assembly line installed vehicles used the Y87 as their later service replacement. Then the 5/16" negative terminal cable had to be updated by the installing mechanic, which was the same scenario for the R79 being replaced with the R89 series.
The VERY short lived safety feature of a 5/16" negative terminal design proved to be more of a nuisance then previously thought.

I don't think anyone has reproduced the Y55.
Too few applications is most likely why.
I watched an NOS original Y55 in the box sell for 1K this past February.

I know it's a really loong shot, but FIAT put Y55 batterys in some of the cars they imported to the east coast in the 70's. Of course finding a FIAT dealer may be harder than finding a Y55. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif
