Rainbow-striped Camaro
1 Attachment(s)
After lusting after this little-known option, I've finally seen a car with this stripe.
Here's an item of literature that shows this stripe, which presumably was a mid-year item: http://www.superchevy.com/features/c...ales_brochure/ The data plate of this Camaro is utterly conventional so there aren't any answers there. I know there's been a discussion here'n there about this stripe, but I thought I'd check in and see if anyone else has seen another car like this and what other bits of info may be out there. It's strange that something that appeared in a brochure is so obscure. PS> Yeah, I know, the side badging is strange... |
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
Is this a Rally Sport option only?

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
I don't think so - the regular nose stripe wasn't, right?
|
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
Back in the day I had a 74' that had multicolored stripes that ran over the roof ... the car was basically yellow ...
|
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
That's the D88 stripe. Shows up in some promotional stuff. None known produced.
That car was in CA years ago. Supposedly very original, but it isn't. |
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
So was it an option that no one ever liked enough to order or did it never make it to the final cut on the option list? It seems kind of neat, surly somebody would have ordered it.

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
Totally badass to me!

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
I've seen two locally in the last 25 years. Both were decals, much like the side stripe. The first was like the car shown and the second was in shades of blue on a blue car. Both cars blew my mind with originality. Both were unrestored. Maybe, maybe not...pretty cool none the less!

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
Interestingly enough, the one I saw was a Vigilite car as well. This car was in the Cleveland area approx. 1986. It was striped as shown in the above pic. I was more interested in the Vigilite at the time, but was familiar enough with the stripes to take a second look. Especially where they started to peal....

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
This car is seen locally often in Big's and my area.. Not sure if this is the one you were referring to Steve??

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
The red car was stated to be all original, 10K miles, was in CA, then AZ.
But it had a bunch of 69 parts, including trans and headrests, SB AC box, and restamped block. |
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
Rich, That's a different car. Same color combo, but as I recall, it was not in as found condition. I did speak with the owner at length about this because at the time he was new to the car and uncertain about the option. I' m not sure if this car had the tape stripe or paint, its been awhile. It's a very nice car and a change up in a row of Camaros. I like different!

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
I'm not convinced not were produced, but production totals are zero and no documented cars have ever surfaced. Just a couple of cars.
I don't know anything about the blue cars, but the blue stripe gets lost, IMO. |

So the plot thickens . . .

And there's promo pics of it.

I really like the blue car..BKH

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
The blue one especially brings the 75-77 Rally-Sport triple-color tape stripes to mind. ~ Pete http://www.phoenixgraphix.com/gm/7577rs.php http://phoenixgraphix.com/kit-colors/7577rs_bluev2.jpg |
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
According to the literature, it was available with cars painted red, blue, green, or bronze.
|
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
I'd like to see one of the bronze ones.
|
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
Or green. I've only seen this red car and this blue car.
|
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
its no surprise that this was thought of in the 60's, kinda like the paisly tops or interiors the mopars had as an option.
|
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
Personally I wouldn't equate the rainbow stripe to the Mod Top - one is a reflection of the times, while the other is simply a color gradient which transcends eras (witness several stripe packages in the 1970s).

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
I always thought it would have been part of their custom promotion for the latter half of the 68 model year. My guess is some were built as promos, but the cost (PITA to apply) led to a canceled RPO.

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
it's a shame they never produced any, it's nice they're showing up now anyway.

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
Is that flyer 8.5x11?
Is it only those two items, one per side? |
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
Yep, heavy stock glossy paper. Looks like it was meant to be folded in half.

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
Ii went back and checked my notes on the Blue car pictured. It's a 10C build, if I have the right car. That would be too early for a factory stripe. I still like it!

Thee more interesting thing I found was in the printing of the Finger Tip Facts. The January revision does not include D88 but does capture the other D96, D90 & D91 additions. The D88 looks to be cancelled 2-28, one would have thought it would be listed there. Looking at the second printings of the Chevrolet sales Lit, I see the D96 and D90 pictures as well, but no mention of D88.

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
BIG, you mentioned the two cars you seen were both decals. I know nothing about decals, is something like this easy to replicate? The close up Dave just posted, stripes don't look even in size. Wonder what the promotional ones looked like.
|
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
Can you imagine the time to stencil and paint this? Not happening on the line or at the dealer and making a profit. Decal. Same type as what you find on a D90 Camaro from the front wheels back. The ones I remember were in "poor" condition. Poor as in peeling. I don't think they were reproduced. This was in the 80's and the cars were drivers / unrestored. I wish I had more to go on, pictures ect. I saw both cars a grand total of once. They were the great white buffalos then as much as they would be today. It was a find for me being into options and accessories, I'm quite sure it wasn't a big deal to anyone else at the time. Both were seen at different times/ years at Carney's drive in. "Home of the worlds largest unorganized weekly car cruise."

Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
As a long time striper, from the photos on this thread, they would have been painted. The stripes wrap into the grille area in a way that that couldn't have been done with decals. It's only in the last few years that we can wrap vinyl into complex areas with the new stretchable, colorfast materials that are now available.
|
Re: Rainbow-striped Camaro
The grille area, on the cars I remember , was body color. The color bands were just like a early D90 stripe minus the break for the emblem.
Decals or paint, IMHO, if they were real.....they were dealer applied for promos only. You can bet as to why it wasn't cost efficient either way. Ever wonder why you see so many 68's with horrible stripes? One of my favorite quotes is..."They never make them too skinny do they?" . BIG |
