Re: air cleaner I.D.
the early Chevelles also had the same unit if i remember right
|
Re: air cleaner I.D.
1987 Yugo I will give you $10.00 for it.

Re: air cleaner I.D.
I think that is off a big block Chevelle. If I remember right if you look in the plenum a small block has 3 dividers where a big block would have 4 dividers. The easiest way to tell is to put it on a small block if it fits it is a small block one. A big block one will not fit on a small block without hitting the distributor. I know this because I had a cowl plenum 68 z with the cowl plenum air cleaner missing and had bought the wrong one. The other way to tell is if you have the duct a Camaro duct will have a shelf on it, the Chevelle is flat across the firewall face.

Re: air cleaner I.D.
The Weird part is the Location of the Dent in the side. If you look at the dent in relation to the Plenum coming off and the centering notch for the carb. The dent points to drivers front corner. A 68 Camaro smog pump isn't over there. I am guessing it is for some type of Chevelle but would like to know the exact application.

66 big block Chevelle
|
Re: air cleaner I.D.
If it is for a big block I believe 1966 and 1967 Chevelle is the only years that used it.

Re: air cleaner I.D.
I saw one on e bay about 4 months ago and they said it was for a 66 67 chevelle SS cowl plenum. That was the first I had ever heard of anything like it.
|
Re: air cleaner I.D.
also think some of the earlier SS as the impala's also go them 62/63

Re: air cleaner I.D.
Does the indentation line up with the hole in the valve cover for the PCV valve? Looks like there is no hole on the pass side base bottom for the PCV intake pipe and screen then they would have to use a breather on the driver side valve cover. There was a breather can that used a vent tube and no PCV valve so that indentation may be there for clearance. I believe Chevy had a cowl intake system available starting in 1963 to make it legal for NASCAR. They ran both Chevelles and Passenger cars in NASCAR in the mid 60s so the cowl system was probably designed to fit both. I have an original picture of an 66 Motion Chevelle with the factory service cowl system but couldn't find it.

Re: air cleaner I.D.
This was ordered by a parts man at a Chevy dealership for his own 68 Z28. He got this along with the correct duct for the Z but it didn't fit. The duct is still in the box but he threw away the box this came in.

Based on what I can see in your picures,it looks like a 1965 Impala. That dent shows up on the 1970 Dual snorkel also, and is intended for the PCV.But the duals dent does not come that close to PCV to hinder it. I think it was provisional? There is a company called NKR Products c/o Nelson Rudsill,PO box 495,Rutherford College, N.C. 28671.Phone#828-874-2335. They are reproducing these Cowl Plenum air cleaners for the early Chevrolet Cars. In the April 2000 issue of the now defunct NCOA Chevelle Report,Mark Meekins wrote a GREAT 7 page 28 picture article about these. He shows all the details and differences between the Remanufactured, and the NOS ones. It is great reading with all your questions answered. Incidentally,I have seen these remanufactured ones sell on Ebay recently, but being advertised as NOS.. Re: air cleaner I.D.
bbdon, it looks like from the picture shown that it is for a 69 Camaro with a 350 and A/T and the ZL2 hood. I cannot tell anything more from that angle but that would be my first guess. It may possibly be from an early Firebird but I don't think it is as it has the two dimples to clear the float adjustments on Holley carbs which were not on the Firebird air cleaners.. The ZL2 air cleaner base was basically the same for all of the 69 Camaros, with the snorkle being different on the 350 a/t cars. They were the only ones to use the hot air choke assembly like the one you have..............RatPack..................

Re: air cleaner I.D.
Which angle should I use to take another picture? Would a bottom shot help? Do you need to see the angle of the snorkle? It droops a lot.
|
Re: air cleaner I.D.
bbdon, this is a 70-72 Chevelle cowl induction air cleaner for a big block. It is similar to the 69 Camaro 350 ZL2 and the angle of the snorkel is what I could not tell from the picture. There are two differences between them, the snorkel is at a sharper angle than the the 350 a/c, and the hot air choke is closer to the base of the snorkel on the Chevelle big block. The hot air choke would be further towards the opening (small end)on the 69 Camaro 350 one. I have one identical to the one you have and it is was removed from a 72 454 Chevelle that a friend parted out. I checked some magazines and I found a restored 72 Chevelle with the same air cleaner. I believe this was used on all 72 cars with cowl induction and not sure when it was used in 70-71 but it is in the assembly manuals for those years. I will email you offline with a picture for your reference.................RatPack................. ....

That looks like a 1971 & 1972 Chevelle Cowl induction Air Cleaner. It has the Thermac pot on the Snorkel as was standard on the Cowl inducted air cleaners begining in 1971 and up.The reason it hits the valve Cover is because you need the Carb spacer to lift it up.It is not for a 1970 system. |

Re: air cleaner I.D.
Wow, lots of air cleaner knowledge. While we are on the subject, does anyone recognise this one? I bought this out of a pile of other air cleaners, and I always thought it was for a Pontiac. But someone mentioned that it looks similar to a cowl induction base with smog equipment. It does not fit a big block, the hot air tube points into the valve cover.
http://www.sonic.net/bbdon/ebay/acl.jpg I decided to sell it on eBay now. [Edited by bbdon (03-20-2002 at 10:41 PM).] |
