9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Thanks Jeff.....this is neat
"I bought this 68 Chevelle 300 post from a friend of mine in 1998 that lives in Gilroy CA. near San Jose. I had it shipped to TN . It was in pieces but very rust free. It is a Fremont built car and built in the last week of January of 68. It is the lowest trim line that Chevelle offered. It is Fathom Blue , black bench seat interior, equipped with a L-79 , 327 325hp , M-20 4 speed , 3:73 posi rear end . Radio delete , rubber mat , no gauges , poverty caps. I took it to GS restorations in Joelton TN and had a frame off resto done on it." http://img46.photobucket.com/albums/...leleftside.jpg http://img46.photobucket.com/albums/...erightside.jpg http://img46.photobucket.com/albums/...leinterior.jpg http://img46.photobucket.com/albums/...elleengine.jpg |

Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
That is a cool car. Just imagine pulling up to that car unsuspectingly. Then this happens https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif then you say https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif what happened?

Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Thanks everybody. I really like this car. Plan on taking it to the ACES Chevellabration in a couple of weeks.

Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Sweet Chevelle! I love the 68-69 post cars... did the trim on the window pillars come standard, or was it optional? Seems odd it would have brightwork there and nowhere else.
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Hey Jeff,
How did that door weatherstrip work out? Car looks great! |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
The car came with the moldings when I got it. It has B 90 on the cowl tag which is the RPO for window moldings. So I left them on there. I dont think they were standard equipment. It does seem odd that it came with them and that it would be on the cowl tag. They must be rare I had a lot of people want to buy them before I had it restored.

Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Scuncio,
Man those doors shut so nice with the NOS weatherstrip!!!! Thanks it worked out very nice! |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Gotta agree with the others here, as that car is SWEET! No muss, no fuss on those babies...just the necessities!! I'm assuming the L-79 wasn't available in '69, when they went to 350 power? Any idea what that car would weigh??
That combo has Pure Stock Drags written all over it! I can see it now...battling it out against it's HOT small block A-body cousins the W-31s and 350HOs!! Awesome... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
I have the L-79 motor in the vette convertible, great motor! In a chevelle - wow! That had be a sweet set-up. Black muscle cars are looking gooood!
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Rob
I am not sure what it weighs. This is a no frills car. It hasnt been done very long and I havent had it out to test out the L-79. The motor was built to stock specs. L-79's are an incredible motor. |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
that thing is sweet!
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Nice Sedan car with some great options. I bet it's a knock-out in person with that Fathom Blue paint -too bad we can't tell in the pics, it looks black.
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
That car Sucks...wanna sell it ?
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Sweet car! I thought it was my job to find cars in this area. I have enough competition with Charley around buying up all the barn finds! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Awesome car Jeff.. I think I recall seeing it on the Frame at the Georgia Regional last year?? Nice to see the finished product. I love the Color, even if I am bias https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Hey Mike;
I think the frame you saw in GA was Rick Wilson's Seqoua green 68 L-79 chevelle. His has A/C and a 3 speed! I showed my frame at the ACES show a couple of years ago. |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
So, was '68 the last year for the L-79? Was the hottest small block in '69 in the A-bodies the 350/300?
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
I had a black/black hardtop '68 L79 car that would give ANY 396-350 car a run. I know that's not saying much, but damm impressive non-the-less. I miss that car, stolen 10/73, never seen again. It had a roll top tach too.

Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
That car is KILLER !
I agree with Rob ..... Pure Stock Drags would be an excellent "next step" with that beauty ...... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
I was wondering when you'd show up, Marks! I don't know if it would have the "spunk" that your W-31 has, but that L-79 in that big body would definitely suprise a few people...
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Was the L79 still a solid-lifter engine in '68? I noticed the lower 325hp rating vs. the 350hp rating from the '66 L79 and was wondering if that was due to a cam change or what.
This IS a verrrry cool car. Belted redlines and dog-dish caps really do it for me, especially on a dark color car such as this one. I can just see the tire smoke billowing from those babies and the WAAAAAAAA sound of that motor. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Having had one, I never did figure out the 25hp difference myself. The Nova had the ram horn exh. manifolds, but those aren't but about 5-10 hp, if that. Same 151 hyd cam, pistons, crank, heads... yada... as the L79 Vette or L79 Nova had. Maybe it was the carb, mine was a Carter, if I remember right.. Mine also had the HD clutch code, M20 and 3.73 gears, buckets, no console, chrome lower trim option, sharp car.

Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
I believe the Corvette had the 350-350 HP that year as well.
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
The L-79 had a hydraulic cam. 68 was the last year it was offered.
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Beautiful & rare car. I love the stripped down versions built for business.
Oh, if your throwing away that annoying smog system give me a shout https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
So did the 350/350hp that year.
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
I thought the L79 was always a hyd. cam?

Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Since the day in 1980 when I found my -67 discbrake wagon
Chevy II, L-79 cars have been my favorites.(That is until I first laid eyes on my COPO !). I have never heard why the -67 L-79 cars had 25hp less than the -66 cars. Could it be a paper thing, just like the 375hp L-78, actually produces 425hp ? Claes Erixon whom I bought my COPO 9561 from, had a friend with a -68 L-79 Corvette. We looked it over once, and it had a Rochester carb and an iron intake. I believe thatīs what makes the difference in -68. Just my two kronor ! Anders |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Anders...did you ever talk to the guy in Des Plaines ?? Hey whats a kronor worth !
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
The L79's had hyd. cams. The power loss in '67-8 was due to a cast iron intake, Rochester Q-Jet carb and a standard (no clutch) fan on non-A/C cars (atleast for Chevy II/Nova). As far as the advertised numbers being correct?? -Who knows. Has anyone ran a dead stock '66 or '67-'68 L79 on a dyno? With the numbers game being played since the mid '60s it could be off. The Camaro had to be the top dog on its first outing in '67. Similar to the Novas having a leg cut off in '64 for the Malibu/Chevelle.
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Bob, Iīm sending Mr L-79 a letter with some photos.
One dollar is something like 7.70 kronor. Anders |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
I thought that at least the six L-79 Chevy II cars built in
-67, had aluminum intakes ? How about Chevelles ? Anders |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Yes, all L79's had hyd. cams. My point was that the 350/350 also had a hyd cam. I believe it was configured with a cast iron intake and quadrajet carb.
|
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
I had a original 1970 350/350 with q-jet and iron intake
As far as hp rating reduction on L79, this could have been marketing decision because Chevy was pushing the SS396 Chevelle 66-68. I think Chevy wanted people to buy the 396 with between 325hp and 375hp so they lowed the the L79's hp to 325hp and discouraged buyers from the low optioned L79 (350hp) non SS and encouraged the customer to buy the more profitable SS 396. |
Re: 9566BA's verrrrry Cooool L79....
Thanks guys for setting me straight on the fact that the L79 ran a hydraulic cam. Sorry for any confusion my question caused! I learn something every day on this forum. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif
