Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Hi everyone!
On the SCR5 reunion link here, I've seen a Harrell 69 Camaro that is dark green with a white ZL/2 hood ( raised section )and a strange rear spoiler. Can any members shed light on exactly what this car is? Is it a COPO, ZL-1, or a dealer modified iron block 427 conversion? Also, were there more than one of this type of conversion? Seems I saw some banter back-and-forth last year about this special rear spoiler regarding either an ebay auction or direct sale to possibly a member here. I'd like to know more about the Dick Harrell conversions. I know of the Funny cars & ZL-1's, but I didn't know they did 427 conversions. Any info on this specific car would be appreciated. I believe Bill Ogle owns ( or did own ) it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Thanks, Steve |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
That car was restored by the Super Car Workshop, who has restored more Harrell cars than anyone else in the world...bkhpah, what's the scoop on Ogle's car?
Also, Steve, there's another gentleman around here that owns a '69 Harrell Camaro, that is similarly equipped as Ogle's...maybe he can jump in and help as well! |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Thanks Rob.

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
The car was a Fathom Green/light green interior COPO 06A build date. The car was a Bill Allen sold car. It is one of a group of three others that we know of. It was a Turbo 400 on the column. It had many interesting items installed by the crew at Harrells shop. This car had the American racing rear wing, one of he more interesting items I have ever seen. Also had a Sun tach on the dash top and special rear spring clips and Harrell badging. It still retained its original drivetrain. One of my favorite cars of all time we have done, and one of the most difficult to restore...BKH

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Thanks for jumping in Brian. Can you tell me more about
the other two DH Camaro's? Did they have the same rear wing, or the std. rear wing? Also, are these three cars you referenced COPO 427 ( iron block ) conversions? Do any other DH 427 69 Camaro conversions still exist or are any unaccounted for? Lastly, why was this car so difficult to restore? Thanks again, Steve |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
bkh, was there paper or vintage pics of this car to support the wing? Also what wheels was it delivered with? Cragers like most Harrell cars? BTW I remember when you guys unveiled that car at Vette Fest a few years ago and how cool I thought it was! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
I sold one a while back. It was an iron head L-88 conversion. No spoiler, X66 car.

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
The car had a ton of documents and pictures of the car from new. The wing was installed on two of the three COPO Harrell Camaros we know of at this time. The Green interior was hard to get right. Somebody had changed it all to black. Small items like seat belts, shift lever, kick panels, steering wheel, even coat hooks were hard to find. Correct vintage speed parts are hard as well. Cragars are only one wheel of many that Harrell offered. Joes old DH Chevelle had A/P mags and that is what we used on the DH Camaro, a vintage set, not repos. I have never yet seen a DH Camaro with factory spoilers in 1969. The other two O6A COPO's are alive and well. One Rally Green the other Glacier Blue. Both are autos. Harrell seemed to sell more autos than 4 speeds...BKH

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
In the fall of 1972 I had the opportunity to buy a Cortez silver DH 69 Camaro. I had no idea what a DH Camaro was. It had that same wing on it, and I disliked it. It, too, was an original TH400 car, and I was looking for a 4 speed car. I took a pass on it https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Brian,
Is the Glacier Blue/blue interior car that you know of the same one that is here in the upper Midwest that is currently painted black? Rick |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Bill, thanks for responding.
Any idea where that car is today? Is it possibly one of the three that Brian mentioned earlier? Did it have the column shifter? Lastly, was it a 427 (L/72), 427 (L-88), etc.? I actually didn't know they did L-88 conversions. Steve |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Yes, it is currently black, Kevin S has the other car in that group. There may be other COPO's, but I have not seen any more. The Silver car sounds like a COPO car also. The earlier 69's were SS convereted cars..BKH

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Brian,
How early is "earlier"? Specifically, the approximate build date(s). Steve |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Good morning,
I currently own the Glacier Blue (currently black) DH COPO with the blue interior. The car had a wing at one time. This is evidenced by the four welded over holes on either side of the trunk lid and a photo that was sent to me from Howard Martin who purchased the car in 1971. This is one of the three COPOS that Dick Harrell purchased through Bill Allen Chev. Bill Ogle has one and Kevin Suydam has the third one. After owning the car for four years, I still do not know everything about the car but am willing to share what I do know. |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Thanks John !
I certainly want to know all that I can about these DH cars. Have-at-it! Steve |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
John, one other question for you. How badly do you want to
find one of those original wings? Steve |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Hi Steve,
I am not a restoration expert but I spoke to one that is. Brian and I talked recently and I asked him to put my car in his restoration pipeline. It seems to me that an original wing would be a postive addition but I would defer that answer to Brian. You apparently know the location of one. There were probably only a handful made, I would be extremely interested in how you located one. John |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
John, cool car.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif and no better shop to do the restoration then the SCW. I would wager they have restored more DH cars then all other shops combined, making them the leading authority on steel bodied DH cars. Hopefully as it awaits its turn in the pipeline we will see it a few shows.

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
An original wing with the mounting brackets are hard to come by. There were two sizes available. The smaller one was used on the Camaros. I don't have the sizes handy, but I can get them. The early date cars I have seen are January 1st week. There may be earlier ones than that though....BKH

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
How about a pic of this wing for those of us that have no idea what one looks like? Sounds interesting...!
Thanks Pantera |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Not the best shot of the wing, but you can get the idea til someone posts a better one. https://www.yenko.net/reunion/Bo02.jpg

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Looks like one of those Aluminum wings on the ricers!

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
I really like the 1/4 stripes that Harrel put on the cars.
Like SS's Dark Green 70 Camaro and on Howie's 70 Camaro. |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Brian,
Can you get the wing sizes and some better, more detailed pictures of one of these wings? Possibly from one of the restorations you did? I'd love to know more. By the way John, before you beat my door down, I don't have the wing you are looking for. I was merely commenting that if your car originally had one, you must be hot-to-trot for one, these days. I'd love to get one myself though. As I mentioned in my initial thread, I seem to remember a discussion either here, the CRG, or elsewhere regarding the recent purchase of one of these original wings. Does anyone else remember this? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Steve |

Ed,
That is my DH COPO in 1971. (the car is now black and wingless) John |

Ed, That is my DH COPO in 1971. (the car is now black and wingless) John [/ QUOTE ] very cool.. I'd definitly put it back to the way it came from Harrell. It looked mean https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
John I thought that vintage picture of you car was so cool when I first saw it. Unfortunately no one wanted to talk about it where it was originally posted. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
Anyway, were you aware of this photo or was this also the first time you saw it posted from Howard? Do you have any others of the car from back then? Again, very cool car and very happy to see you here. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
Yeah John. Lets see more pics of your car. Then and now https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
I do have additional photos of the car as it is now and I will find them and scan them in. When I spoke to Howard, he said that is the only photo he could find of the car back when. My intentions are to restore the car just as Howards photo looks

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
John,
I just want to give you my humble opinion here. I have to say that if that is the way your car came from DH, you need to put it back the exact same color scheme. That car looks so awesome that way. I can't say I ever saw that paint scheme before. Was it stock? Steve |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
will it be done by SCR8 https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

I can't say I ever saw that paint scheme before. Was it stock? [/ QUOTE ] Exactly one of the questions I had asked and never got an answer to. You will notice that the hood and side stripe is nearly the exact same scheme as on Steve Sandlin's original paint 70 DH Camaro. It was previously stated from a reliable source that because of the spoiler this car was probably a late August 69 car. Maybe this was the only 69 to get this paint scheme? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif https://www.yenko.net/reunion/SCR7999996.JPG |
Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
The paint color (Glacier Blue) is the stock color as verified by the trim tag. My intentions (with Brian's help) is to restore the car exactly as the photo shows. The car will not be ready for SCR8, in fact the restoration will even be started. Regardless, I believe I will bring the car to SCR8. The car does not show very well but my car (as well as all of your cars) is an important part of our hobby and the public should be allowed to experience that. I am also looking forward to meeting all of you.

Re: Clarification on Dick Harrell 69 Camaro's
OK,
Silly question time! Where and when will the next Super Car Reunion be held? Who can attend? Room availability? I want to see this DH Camaro in person. Steve |
