69 Chevelle SS Tail Panel Paint

I've seen a lot of '69 Chevelles over the years and most SS cars have the blacked out tail panel between the trim pieces, but a few have the black going up into the trunk lip area like a Camaro. Does anyone know which is correct or does it have to do with which plant produced the Chevelle. I'm pretty sure someone here has the answer to a question I've wondered about for years.
If some of you have an original paint Chevelle, I would like to see a picture of this area.

here is a pic of my 1969 original paint Azure Turquoise SS Postsedan tailpanel

The Azure Turquoise is faded everywhere except where the trim pieces had been.

I have seen K.C. cars that had the black out a little wider than above where the black was touching the holes for the moldings.

This is from our original paint Baltimore Chevelle. If you need other shots just holler. I also included some inside detail shots.

Yup a very special Baltimore 69!

Thanks for posting those pictures! What a great site for information. Does anyone have a picture with the black all the way up to the trunk seal?

Hi Sam - I took the cover off last week, bought some fresh 110 and fired her up for the first time this year. What a great sound! A short drive out on the streets reminded me of how much torque the L78 has. (I forget sometimes) When the weather calms down a little more I'll go for a longer drive.

I have personally never seen this and have made 69 Chevelles the focus of my hobby for 30 + years. If GM ran the black up to the trunk seals, I'd like to know that as well and from which factory.

Most excellent!:cool2: Good to hear she still gets YOUR motor going! How many years have you had it now?

I've owned this Chevelle for 33 years now and it's part of the family.

Robert - very impressive! I believe you started a "member's ride" thread on your beauty (exact opposite color scheme to mine!). Would you share some of the terrific vintage racing photos that you have? As I recall they are quite impressive! :naughty::biggthumpup:

Edit: oops, went back to yr mbrs ride thread and there they were (drag pix). Just love 'em!!!!!!!!!!!

The main reason for asking is that when I first bought my Chevelle it still had the original paint and the black on the tail panel was painted all the way up to the trunk lip like a Camaro. I had never seen this before and thought someone had repainted this area. When I took it to the painter I told him to paint that area like the pictures shown here. Years later I saw a couple of 69 Chevelles with the tail panel painted like mine had been and one owner told me that was correct for KC Leeds plant cars. Mine was built in July at the Leeds plant. There was also a short discussion with NCOA members about this years ago but nothing came of it. I've always wondered if I made a mistake on how my Chevelle was painted and was hoping someone here could provide an answer.

Thanks, Sam. Your L78 is pretty impressive as well!!

Has anyone else seen the black tail panel painted up to the trunk seal on a KC built '69 Chevelle?

jer 04-21-2018 03:36 PM

I've got 2 KC '69s here. Both were painted between the moldings not above the upper moldings. Both had the black paint extended on the quarter extensions also, supporting the belief that the quarter extensions were painted on the car but temporarily extended maybe 1/2" to get the paint in all areas and not bridge between the two.
I've personally stripped both cars of their original paint.
I've also had quite a few SS parts cars that were only painted between the moldings. Some were Fremont cars, a couple more KC cars.
Not saying it couldn't have happened, but my take on assembly line anomalies...I'd go with the mainstream unless I had iron clad documentation. It'd still be a tough call, knowing I'd constantly have to defend the decision.

tunes 04-22-2018 11:11 PM

Thanks for the info on your Chevelles. I guess it will be one of those mysteries that won't have a definite answer. I've learned that things happened at different plants over the years that didn't always agree with the assembly manual.

I believe we were parked next to each other at KC show in September 2016

tunes 04-24-2018 02:55 PM

You're right - we were next to each other but I didn't know who you were then. We will have to get together at this years KC show in September.

You know of course that the '69 row was the best part of the show.

All three Stellar '69`s :-)
