Default Couple new Engines in the Garage

I have had a couple more engines come into the shop over the past few weeks.. Updates will be as I am done with them.. May have to change the RGR from Red Gorilla Restorations to Red Gorilla Racing.. Im kidding of course since this is just a side hobby..

First is a 469ci BBC with a B&M mini blower.

2nd is a 347ci LS engine with forged internals that will be setup for a boosted application. You know; one of those silly little hair dryers..

Cool project.

I see you Scotchbrited / wire wheeled the deck surface on the BB. I have never touched the deck surface when I rebuild my motors. Do you believe it is necessary?

Its out of habit. I use a scotchbrite disc on a 4" angle grinder. I always do it to get a clean surface so I can lay a straight edge on the deck surface to verify its true. If its not then its added to items to be done when at the machine shop.

469 is out at the machine shop. Will know more about it once he makes a cleanup pass.. In the meantime, I am throwing together the LS engine. Coated the bearings and pistons today. Within the next few days Ill drop the crank in along with the pistons.

Great stuff and thanks for the updates!
The aluminum lump LS engines are very cool but a bit new for me to know also maybe others here too so very interesting to see and learn more about.
Do you or others here have experience building these LS engines non boosted for use in older cars w/ factory FI systems or carbed w/ Q'Jets/Holleys?
And besides '97+'Vettes/'98+ Camaros, what vehicles can we find these engines and parts to build from also are the FWD LS blocks any use?

I have run these with factory ecu and harnesses in older setups as well as going carb'd and using a stand alone system to run the timing. All you really need to run a carb is a crank sensor & a cam sensor & a stand alone to fire the coils. As for applications, these are found in several GM vehicles over the years. Trucks, Camaro, Vette, Firebird & GTO. There were some fwd cars that got an aluminum 5.3L but it was only for a few years and not many were made. Now that the 6.2 has become more popular and common it is quickly becoming the engine of choice. I cant remember 100% but I think the FWD LS engines are the same but that would require more searching to know for certain.

I have slacked off the LS engine due to waiting on parts and the BBC is still at the machine shop.. So I finally got around and installed the crank on the LS.

I also have a few new engines in the garage.. Along with a couple sets of heads.. Looks like Ill be alittle busy this fall & winter..

Took this morning to get the LS shortblock together. After measuring the end play on the crankshaft at 0.008" It was time to throw the slugs in the holes.. Because this engine is being setup for a turbo I gapped the rings at 0.026". Pistons are JE with coatings applied by yours truly, rods are Eagle with ARP rod bolts, rings are Mahle and bearings are King.. The red coating you see on the crank and rods etc is Comp Cams Valve train lube for help with the first dry startup. I also spray down anything internal if the engine will be sitting for any long period of time.
