Default rusty 12 bolt rear end housing

I am restoring a rear end housing and the center section is pitted badly. If I smooth it with filler how could I put a cast iron texture back on it? any thoughts on this? Thanks John

Default Re: rusty 12 bolt rear end housing

Have the entire housing dipped to remove the rust and scale. Then assemble an old cover and duct tape off all openings to the inside. Sand blast the exterior using aluminum oxide, this is very agressive media and should knock down some of the pitting and smooth it out some. We have done this in our restoration shop, but also have filled and sanded for a smooth finish. Depends on the look you want.
