Default Re: MY ORIGINAL ZL-1 MOTOR DYNO'D !!!!! 540 HP!!

Im thinking that I have all the right stuff....anyone?? I bought most of these parts so long ago, I havent even checked the numbers...they werent making so many fake/repo parts back in the day!! Im really not sure on the t.i.ignition stuff..

BTW, we did not use the NOS cam and lifters as more than one person told me to use a newer cam as they are much better, although I got a cam with the exact ZL-1 specs.

I wonder what power these motors could make with a good match porting and a roller cam???

this is the last pic before the dyno!!!

Later model GM replacement, original has embossed 207 or 176 number, not painted number.

Thanks John, bummmerrrrr on the coil....I cant imagine how much one is nowadays....how about the amp??? (I put wrong pic)

And the pistons were stock ZL-1 specs, but Im sure the heads may or may not have been shaved at some point...and the head gasket thickness??? The combustion size??? I would just be guessing to tell you the truth...

343 is the correct amp.

More accurately, I was wrong on the coil. It was #210 from the factory.

Transistor Ignition Coils

TI systems use a special ignition coil. These coils have lower impedance than the standard ignition coils and are capable of flowing much higher current. This allows them to make a hotter spark at high RPM ranges when the spark plug voltage requirement is higher. If a standard coil is used, it will not be able to generate sufficient secondary voltage to work properly. Though there were several TI coil numbers, only two pertain to use on the Camaro. Part # 1115207 was the coil used for all OTC systems. (Photo 7) Part #1115210 was the exclusive coil that came from the factory on the 1969 ZL1 Camaros. The only number available as a service coil was the #1115207. The “210” could not be purchased at the dealer.

Here's the whole article in the T.I. ignition.

So I got the word today...after a slight problem with one pushrod, the head was bolted back on the original motor from my ZL-1, and it dyno'd at 540 HP!!! After all these years, she purrs again....I really need to get crackin' on the car restoration nowwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish my motor could talk....I can just imagine all the memories it has...and all the stories it could tell!!

[/ QUOTE ]

What RPM did you get that 540hp at?...also what is the different cam you used, manufacturer and part number?

Nicely done

Thanks Tony....that is my version of a GM "exploded" view pic of my motor....I think I saw an original GM pic similar somewhere. Thats where I got the idea...My "now" ex-wife was not too thrilled when she came home to see all this "junk" in her living room....(part of the reason she is now the "ex-wife")...hehehe...she never did appreciate my cars and parts....I still remember her being p.o.'d when I cash-advanced my credit card for the 1500 bucks to buy the motor at Carlisle swap meet that year....that was a ton of money for me back then...the divorce was rather painful...$$$$$...but, Thank God that she could care less about all my junk cars and parts at the time...I managed to keep all my "junk" !!!!!!

max

p.s....still have not recieved the actual dyno sheet from Jerry M.....if he does not post it, I will....I've extended my stay in Colombia for another week, but I assume it is probably in my mailbox back home...

Before John Armstrong sold his Super Stock 1969 Camaro, he was running it in SS/BA with the ZL1 engine. For anyone who follows NHRA racing, Armstrong was the first Chevrolet Super Stock car to run in the eights. 8.88 at 149mph to be exact. NHRA would not let him run in SS/AA at that time. Armstrong is probably the best and smartest BB engine builder in the country. Well, actually he lives in Canada.
