Default Re: How bout a few Vintage aircraft photos?

Ken
When radials are running there using oil, they do not load up, they just blow it out. On the Supper Connie's I was a flight crew member on each engine, R3350 Turbo compounded, Had a 42 Gal oil tank mounted behind the engine in the wing, plus two 67 gal auxiliary tanks, one in each wing root. The FE could transfer oil around as needed. On a typical 15 or 17 hr recon flight we would use around 50 or 60 gallons of oil.
Radials do have a tendency to collect oil in the bottom cylinders while static, that's why, in old WW II footage you will see crew members hand proping, this allows the oil to exit the exhaust valves. There is a danger of a hydraulic lock if enough oil collects.
I bet your sorry you asked...
