Original SS grilles for non-black cars were molded in black. Only the plastic outside the grille moldings was painted body color.

Thanks for the reply william. I was referring to the "BLACK" center section of the grill. NOT the body color part of the grill. Was a Satin Black used, Flat Black etc....

No, no..... I have the incorrect silver grill on my car now. I want to change the color to the "Correct" BLACK. My car is LeMans Blue! Just not sure what Black to use. Satin, Flat, Dull etc.. I'm referring to the center section of the grill only.

----Whos on first??? LOL!.........Semi-gloss Krylon would do the trick. Shoot it from a bit of a distance and it will even look better.
----Looking back at your first post I see its Krylon Fusion. I dont know how that sprays or flows out. I really miss the original Krylon semi-gloss. Do a bit of testing first.....Bill S |

Don, if your car has an original GM silver grill, it is worth a fair amount of money if it is in nice shape (no broken pieces). It would be in high demand from someone restoring a Z-28 or COPO. Have seen mint GM silver grills bring $1000. The GM black SS grills are pretty common or just use a repo. The black center portion on SS grills was not painted at the factory as it was molded in black plastic. The outer portion was painted body color.

Thanks Copo. I'm pretty sure the grill is a repro.

I have a black std GM NOS grill(3957062) in the box I will deliver to the Bronx on July 14th for $750 if you do not want to paint the grill you have.
Just an option- I know this is not the area to sell things. Side bar questions for those who might know, What is the molded color under a silver GM std grill?- I would have thought white or silver I have another GM grill in the box that is silver but under the silver is black( tiny chip of paint came off-box rub point)- and does not look like it was masked and sprayed or ever bolted to a car, part number is the black grill number above. grill was shipped to Penske Chevrolet, King of Prussia PA about 1982 when I used to buy from them Fred PM or call if interested 215 651 5801
