Sounds really bizarre and bold. Were locks broken? Assume police involved? Post photos of cars. Is it maybe your friends father requested them moved and forgot?

Great question,and how was entry to the cars gained?
I would think this would be a deciding factor if they were indeed stolen or access was allowed.
And did the hauler have ignition/door lock keys?
