I need opinions on this stamp everything ive researched shows that the first number in the vin should be a 7 and not a 1. Is that correct?

First digit of the sequential part of the vin is 7. 1= Chevy 9= 69 S= Vette. Is it a whole car, or just the engine?

Just the short block. So the stamping is correct then?

Yep that is correct. end the line 1969 L71 427-435hp 4speed Corvette block. Being that it was end of production it should be a "512" casting block. 69 corvettes earlier through out the production year used "439" or "270" casting 427 blocks. Here is a picture of a CCAS/Grenning Certified original 1969 L71 stamp pad from a early production 1969 Corvette.

GM Division Codes included w/ stamped drivetrain components are often misunderstood being they're not part of VIN itself but helpful when known as Division Code List below. Knowing the first 3x Digits represent Division + Model Year + Vehicle Built Plant is always helpful for quick/basic identification of loose parts without need for casting info, not just engines but often Muncies too. ![]() ~ Pete GM Division Codes; 1 = Chevrolet 2 = Pontiac 3 = Oldsmobile 4 = Buick 5 = GMC 6 = Cadillac .
