I don't know if the Chevy guys were on to this but what the Pontiac guys would do (before the proliferation of Hurst floor shifters and four speeds) was change the rear axle ratio such that they could launch in 2nd gear; that way they only had to make one shift (the 2-3 shift straight down). K

Lee...how did you acquire a photo of this car? This wagon is owned by a good friend of mine here in Illinois.

Tom Akin's "Lead Sled". I was the Noob in the service dept. at Schukei Chevrolet when it rumbled into John Day's stall as a brand new car for prep as an AHRA stocker. L72/TH400. 4:56 or 4:88 IIRC. I believe 1 or 2 built?
In the early eighties, now a street car, the second owner would occasionally park it outside the parts dept. at the other Chevy dealership in town where I was at the time. Where is it now, Washington state?? A couple years ago Auto World produced a 1/64 scale of it. John Day who did the wrenching on the Lead Sled is still racing his alcohol injected SBC dragster at age 80. Bill W |
