Many years ago, the owner sent copies of the paperwork to the CRG. It was delivered to the Chevrolet Zone Office in LA. The confirmation # on the w/s matched the body number on the tag; visible in one of the photos on the Petersen site. No question it is the HRM/SCG/PHR test car. In one of the photos no longer on the site, the hood pad is still in place. Another photo shows the tail pipes were painted black. Built with '68 rear stripe layout.
Hot Rod had some fun with it, chronicled in the January and May 1969 issues. They milled the heads, rebuilt it with headers, steel flywheel, Schiefer clutch and a scatter shield. Added T-bars, comp plus shifter, slicks, 5.38 gears. Ran a best of 12.73/110 before the rear axle blew.
Apparently cleaned up and later sold as a demo, according to a stamp on the w/s.
Presumedly, all this occurred prior to delivery. The photos show CA Mfg. tags. However, the POP lists a DD of 9/26/68. Based on Chevrolet End of Month records, the car wasn’t yet built. Hmmm…
Doubt there were two built with these options.
