I've got a turbo 400 trans with the code 72-CY- 1732. The tag was striped & painted over however there is still a partial pice of yellow paint near the id tag rivet. The date code is "348". The partial VIN looks to be 12N161400 stamped on the driver's side. The case number is 8623462. From my research this is a 400 with high shift points possibly offered in the high horsepower novas,camaros, chevelles camaros. Any help deciphering would be appreciated.

It's a 1972 MY trans, built December 14, 1971.
1=Chevrolet 2=1972 N=Norwood. Probably for a 1972 Camaro Z28.

Specifically,it is an original 1972 assembled CY Turbo 400,and as William said came originally in a 1972 Z/28 Camaro equipped with an LT-1 350/255HP engine only.

So in 1972 the Z28 had a CY turbo 400 yellow ID tag with tail piece code #8624486. See attached missing photo from original thread indicating that it is a CY not an MY. Also would it be the high shift point? Another note it does not have the "T350?" stamped on the short tail shaft. I believe is the designation if it's not a T475.

Im getting a bit crossed up here. SS69Chevelle indicates "Y" designation as being with the big block list & mr70 indicates CY being used up to 1972. Why would you have a at best 5500 rpm engine paired up with a 6200-6400 "Y" designated shift point transmission?

All 69 Turbo 400s that I have seen have a yellow ident tag. No guarantee on that one though. Also, Grady's 69 Camaro has the VIN stamped on the CX trans at the top of the bell housing. I don't have a picture of it, but the screw driver in these photos shows where I found the VIN on this TH400 Coded CA. FWIW. Phil Woj Last edited by Woj; 05-04-2025 at 04:42 PM. Reason: Info Added. |

The 69 L78 Nova used the CX trans...along with L78 Camaro & Chevelle and COPO cars. 1970 was the first time the high shift point tranny was offered with a small block [Deuce and Z28]. It appears from the listings in Colvin's book, there were a number of applications for the CY coded unit up until 1974. Not sure if the shift points were lowered to match up with the engines available...it would make sense though.
**I have seen high shift point TH400's with the partial VIN stamped on the bell housing. Quote:
