I heard a lot of the L78's that were removed were sold to the Navy to replace the 409 blocks that were used as anchors....could just be urban legend.

Well the straight six they pulled the tags off had to be registered at one point and not reported stolen, for this bigblock 427 to get a good registration using the six's #'s

The L-78's were mostly sold through the Baldwin Chevrolet parts department. There was a good article about this a few years back in one of the mags.

I just can't see them using a 375hp motor? would not idle smooth and use too much gas. a low compression 360 hp would be a much better motor for them to use. JMO.... Who know's sounds like a good question for someone to find the answer to?
