I ran across what appears to be an original 69 Impala SS for sale today. It's a "run hard put away wet" car but could be saved. It has front disc brakes, Big block 4-speed non-air car some rust in the front fenders, quarters, looks like most of the interior is there, also has 427 badges on front fenders, needs a complete resto. No price on the For Sale sign. What do you look for to see if its an original big block or SS car and whats an approximate fair price to offer for a car that needs alot? Thanks Brent.

Brent,
Look at the engine ID pad ( behind alternator ) and post the codes you see. Also, look for the VIN stamping. If not on this pad, look on the left rear of the block ( rough casting surface ) flange area that mates to the transmission ( bell housing ). The VIN may be stamped there and it is usually tougher to read. Also, look for the VIN on the transmission main housing flange area where it meets the tail housing. Probably on the passenger side. That will at least tell you if any of the components are originals. Also, the block casting number & dates will help as well as the information on the cowl trim tag. There's lot's more to look for, but this is probably as good a starting point as any. Steve

If it was a fully restored, high #2 condition car with documentation, you'd be hard pressed to get $20K out of it, so go from there. If it was a documented L72 car, it would bring a bit more, but those are few & far between. I owned a 69 Impala convertible for 18 years and did a frame-off on it. Many parts are hard to come by.

Thanks guys, I'll try to drive by it again and see if the owner will let me take some pics. If I want to pass on it (probably so) I'll post it and you guys can see if you want to give it a go. I don't know a thing about these cars but a good website for them is at www.Impalass427.com

These are cool big cars....if it 's an easy restoration it would be a ball to own and drive...

Ive restored a few of them and they cost more to restore than they are worth. all the parts like bumpers,wheel mouldings,trim,sheetmetal is expensive because nothing is reproduced. unless its a 425hp car,buy a nice one instead!
