Anyone ever hear of a car not being in the NICB data base? The reason i ask is my Vin can not be found but yet i have paperwork from North Carolina of the car being registered there in 1969. Any Ideas?

Yes, it this seems to happen 10-20% of the time. There are a couple of issues. One, there are millions and millions of cars in the database and there are bound to be some VINs that never made it in. Secondly on the older cars the technician at NICB has to use old microfishe to find the car unlike the newer VINs that they can do a computer search, therefore you have a lot of opportunities for either human error, or simply someone not being thorough looking through the microfische. Also, the records at times have incorrect information. As I have posted before, the NICB records for my Yenko Camaro show shipment from GM to a boat dealer in Alabama, but actually a title search showed it went to Yenko and then was sold through Colonial Chevrolet. Since you have access to NICB, you might want to try again with another technician to see if you get the same results.

So how did you go about doing a title search? I am trying to find out what dealer sold my car. Would also like to talk with prior owners to get pics and info to restore my car. Thanks

Think like a detective (or hire one) and start with the previous owner and work backwards following all the leads. For title searches start with the state DMV where the car is registered now. Most have websites and you need to fill out the proper form and request copies of all titles and previous registrations. From there it might lead you to another state and then ou repeat the process. Unfortunately with privacy laws and the fact that many states are not cooperative or have purged records after 5-10 years the search often hits a dead end. There have been many discussions on this site for this topic. I would suggest doing a site search to get more ideas. Good luck.

Try carfax.com I'm not 100% sure if they do the older cars or not.I owned a 89 GTA vert at one time and I went ahead and put my information in on the car to car fax.The information that you get back from car fax with have, how many owners have owned the car and I believe that it will give were the car was owned at also(what state and city ect.).Plus it'll say if the cars been in any accidents.

Carfax only works on cars with a 17 digit VIN. 1981(?) or later.

Although I can not speak for other states, the Illinois Secretary of State has purged any records older than 10 years.
