Speaking of odd 427/425 cars, there were two that used to show up at Osceola. One was a dark blue 66 Bel Air 4-speed wagon owned by a guy named Bob Fox. He owned a service station and ran it with headers and slicks at first. When NHRA put a pure stock section in the rule book, he went back to manifolds, mufflers and Prowler GT street tires. Dont know how fast he could really go cause he just went fast enough to win. He never let it all hang out. The car was for sale in the late 70's for $3500 cause he was retiring and moving to Arizona.
Second 427/425 car was a special ordered puke green 68 Bel Air 2 door post car with an in dash factory tach and three on the tree ![]() ![]()

Only to have those days back..I had the same console with 4sp and gauges in 66. I seem to recall a vaccum gage too? Was that in 66 or was that in some othe hot rod I had? hmmmmm
I ran into a guy back around 69 who had a 66 Biscayne big block but darn if I can remember if it was a 427 or not. I found this car at a dealer in late 1965. It was a demo being driven by a salesman and was my first new car. That photo is around 1969 (sat in garge there for 2 yrs while I was in Army 66-68) and not long before I traded it in on a 1970 Chevelle SS454 LS5. ![]() |

ZL1.FUN - You're better off going to Classic industries to buy the dual snorkle air cleaner they have for $189.00. It's the closest thing you'll find at a reasonable price. Original full size '66 L72 air cleaners are going for well over $1,000.00. There was an NOS one that sold recently for $4,550.00. Guys with original cars needing an air cleaner will fight for it. Save yourself some bucks.
Anders - Thanks! That's the 4 door I was thinking about. John Brown - Thanks for the info on the L72 Bel Air wagon. I wonder where it is now. That would be a cool piece. Some people didn't realize that if you didn't spend the extra bucks and order a 4 speed behind an L72, you got a 3 speed on the tree. That would be interesting running down the strip and shifting like that!

It there a difference between the air cleaner used on these cars and the one used on 70-72 Z28s? If so, can anyone tell me what it is?
Thanks, Jason |

Yes, there are a few differences. That's why the price on the real ones get steep.
First, take a look or feel the bottom. It should be flat/smooth. Take a look at these 2 pictures. wrong- note the ridge in the bottom; even while it's on a car you can reach under and feel this ridge/groove ![]() correct- note the flat bottom; no ridge/groove; take note on the part number #6421970 and the correct location of service decal, pass. side ![]() Now for the more obvious wrong thing without having to touch it. wrong-the way the snorkels are mounted is different; these have a mounting flange that's on the outside of the air cleaner body See the way the snorkel meets the body on this one? ![]() here's how it should mount and look ![]() It shouldn't have a service decal in between the snorkels that says "Front" on it. The top was not chrome. It was painted black just like the rest of the air cleaner.
