I've also posted this on the Team Chevelles message board, and one of the members suggested I do it here, as well. I'm trying to track down a '70 Chevelle SS-396 that my parents purchased new in 1970 (and sold in 1972). The only records I have is a dealer price quote and a service receipt, which fortunately shows the VIN number. It's either 136370B165352 or 136370B105352. I can't be certain because one of the sixes looks like a zero.
The car was ordered with Hugger Orange paint and white racing stripes, 396 engine (not such which one), Super Sport package, cowl induction, Posi, power steering, and air conditioning. My mom's been talking about this car for a long time now and trying to find it has really piqued my interest. We're in the Pittsburgh, PA area so it might still be nearby. Has anyone seen a car like this? (The Camaro on the trailer was drag raced by my dad in the early '70s. We still have that one!) ![]() ![]() |

My dad started racing with the 396 but eventually swapped it out for an aluminum 427 (ZL1) with tunnel ram, dual electric fuel pumps, etc. The car received a drag racing suspension, full roll cage, and Dana rear axle. All told, it was putting down mid-10's in the quarter mile, and that was with four-speed. By the late 1970s he was getting out of drag racing and decided to sell the engine (yes, I know), installing a 350 in its place. I'm currently working on swapping a 396 back in and getting the car running again. It still has the original paint (sans decals) with 14,000 miles on the odometer. |

Hey Andy, welcome to the site. When I met my wife she was living in Murrysville on Himalaya Drive in the Shangrala development. She graduated from Gateway High. I have lived in Oakland, Shadyside (wrong side of the tracks), and Squirrel Hill. If your family's Chevelle came from the factory with A/C it was the 396/350HP version. Terrific vintage photos. Thanks!

Very Nice pix iroc.
Was it a Manual or Auto Trans.? There are a few Monaco Orange 70 chevelles still snortin today. It was the same Orange shade used on the 69 Camaro's only they called it Hugger Orange on the Camaro,Monaco on the Chevelle.. I may be able to help you locate this. What can your parents remember about the day they bought it? What was the delivery date and selling Dealership? |
