Default mustang 5.0 vs 1LE camaro as collector items

Ive seen discussion of 1LE camaro's as being collectibles. I think they are unique cars but agree that not many people know what they are, maybe similar to yenko and motion cars even a few years ago. the thing that steers me away from the 1LE is that there isnt much racing heritage to go with them. emotion tends to go hand in hand with what cars will be valuable, if you want a third gen these would be the ones to pick up along with a well optioned iroc in an unusual color, but i dont know if i would buy one and hold onto it for 20 years hoping to strike gold, buy one if you want one.
I really think the 5.0 mustang will be a better bet for a collectible car, I'm 30 so it gives a frame of reference. Every one I knew had one of these cars at some point, they all built them up, they all wanted to go as fast as so and so. Im not a ford guy and neither were most of my friends but we bought the cars anyway, they were cheap to modify, the mods worked and we all banged gears in one. the third gen on the other hand was expensive to modify and as soon as you did it was a coin flip to which would go first the trans or the rearend any time you tried to race.
I think a clean low mileage 90-92 5.0 5 spd, preferably a notchback, would be a better bet for a collectible car because its going to be the car my generation either had or wanted to own so the emotional tie is there, that will always drive the market. Im interested in everyone elses opinion.

I wouldn't bank on either being collectables, that being said the ratio of mustang 5.0's to 1LE Fbody's is probably 10,000 to one.To be fair you need to compare the 1LE cars to the Corba R models that were both purpose built for showroom stock based pro racing series like the old Firehawk Endurance championship. The Cobra R's were and are quite a bit more expensive than any 1LE,if you watched BJ this year some of the new Grand Sports track Mustangs fetched well over 150k.Biggest hitch with these cars is nobody knows what they are, even 80% of owners on fbody forums.I think guys your age grew up in an Integra R world and one of those cream puffs stashed way would prove to be a better spec play than the above.Easier ways to make money IMO.

I agree except you need to include the 94/95 cars, they look good, are tough as nails and the last of the 5.0's and run good stock and with a few easy mods really wake up just like the early cars, I have one and cant get the wife out of it to even wax it.

she likes this part best I think

late2brake, im afraid you may be right on the Integra idea. Im not buying any of them up as collectibles, Im looking at 2002-2004 mustangs in bad colors right now as a driver to beat on, with the new body style out these cars are going pretty cheap for what you get. im looking at bad colors to keep the price down, there wont be any resale value, Ill drive it until its ready for the scrap heap.

the cobras or any tuner modified mustangs would be good buys, maybe this generation of motion type cars.

They say there's an ass for every seat, but the 1LE in my opinion is a piece of crap, and most likely, a bad investment. No 1LE to my knowledge was competitive in the Firehawk series, American Iron, etc., and I don't think people really care about these racing series anyway.

I remember wanting a 1LE just because of the mystique and supposed race-cred, but that was before I got my Mustang GT. After driving one, unimpressed would be an understatement. At 5k miles the thing had dash and rear hatch rattles, etc., and the interior in those 3rd gens is a complete catastrophe as far as design and materials.

So, I say no. If you wanna capture the 80's and 90's, and are speculating, buy a nice Mustang now and enjoy it along the way. The aftermarket for those cars right now is bigger than it's ever been. Pretty amazing.
