The car is a true SS396. It has been nicely restored and has very nice paint, its a dry CA car with no rust, and runs great. It currently has a 1969 Camaro 396 with a “JG” code suffix (T0120JG on block pad). This is a rare block in its own right, much more rare than the Chevelle 396 block in fact. The transmission is the original turbo 400 with a shift kit installed. Rare factory A/C car, especially for California. Documented with protecto plate and dealer receipts. Nice car... if my memory serves though (I'm getting up there) the CA DMV stopped issueing "black plates" in the March - May timeframe, 1969. Anything registered in July, 1970 would have gotten blue/yellow tags. That sequence looks like late 68, early 69, but I have been wrong before. And the left sticker area is reserved for the month the right year sticker expires.

JB, you are mistaken. 1970 was the last year they issued the black plates:
History of the California License Plate Basic information on 1963- present plates: 1963 was the last year a complete new plate issuance to all vehicles occured (the plates had a black background and chrome yellow characters). 1970 is the year the basic plate was changed to a blue background with yellow characters. It was also the last year any black/yellow plates were issued. 1976, year round registration started which requires a month expiration sticker afixed to the upper left hand corner of the plate. 1982 is the year when the standard plate was changed to a white background with blue characters with a sun graphic and CALIFORNIA in red block letters. It was also the last year any blue/yellow plates were issued. 1987, reflectorized plates with CALIFORNIA in red block letters were issued. The sun graphic was discontinued. 1991, only reflectorized basic plates were issued. 1993, the word CALIFORNIA was changed to red script. 1997, stickers were made with background colors that change every year and characters printed in black. Basic plates issued from 1998 through 2000 contain the words SESQUICENTENNIAL - 150 YEARS in red block letters at the bottom of the plates. 2001, the basic plate is white with blue characters and CALIFORNIA in red script. There is no writing at the bottom of the plate. click here to see: link to the CA DMV I will take $30k or best offer for the car. The reserve on the car is less than that though. thanks, mike |

Mike,
Like I said, I have been wrong before. My personal experience is with 1969 Camaros. The latest Van Nuys produced cars I have owned that were issued CA "black plates" were registered new in February 1969 (XJZ) and April (YZN) 1969 which indicated the DMV sequences were at their end. For 1970, the alpha and numeric sequences were reversed, if I recall. I personally have not seen a 1969 Camaro with "black plates" issued after May, 1969, but have heard of July, 1969 Camaros with them. My experience with the DMV is, when they say 1970, they are referring to model year 1970. These are my experiences and observations, nothing more. The DMV here back then on stuff like this was sporadic, and possibly could have had those plates left over in 1980. I do know if I were to register your car here today, and had the plates with me, they would be confiscated as the DMV is trying to get the "black plates" off the road because they are "not reflectorized." Maybe Charley will chime in. He probably has 10 "black plate" cars in that facility he calls a garage... JB |

JB, the plate that's on the car is one used for car shows, its not registered to the car, so there is no chance of it being confiscated. I like the look of the black plate vs. the blue on this color car. It could have been ordered that way based on the info. i listed above. Lots of people have commented on the black plate and correctness of it. It's hard for me to understand why...its the car that's the attraction!. Thanks, mike

Mike,
It is a nice car, and reasonably priced, IMO. The reason you got the comments on the plate was because it is out of kilter with the car. Being a Camaro guy, I never noticed if there was a "black plate" on any other make/model after mid-1969. Didn't care. Just knew for certain no Camaro after mid-1969 had one. I was kind of being polite, but I knew there was no way a July 1970 initially registered vehicle in this state could have a "black plate" on it, especially with that late 1968/early 1969 alpha numeric sequence. And the absolute latest a 1970 year sticker would have been issued would have been December 31, 1969, seven months before the car was registered, so there was just no way. But I like your car. In 1991 there was a 72-72 1969 Z/28 for sale in Orange (CA) I was looking at. There was a freshly restored 1970 SS454/450HP (black/black) sitting next to it. Beautiful automobile. Although salivating over it, I bought the Z. I'm a Camaro guy. The Chevelle was stolen and never seen again. JB |
