Default 1969 Camaro Grille Refinish Tips

I have seen a few things on this in the forum already, but not on my specific question. Were the silver grilles painted silver basically only from the front and the back was black or ? I have a very nice original grille someone painted black and I would like to refinish in silver. Also, any spray can brands or part # recommendations to accomplish a good job? Any prep and spraying tips? I.E. spray the back with color 1 and then do the front? Thanks.

The back of the grill was an off white "bone" color, not black. I beleive they were painted silver from the front with some overspray going to the backside.

Replacement parts grills were black, probably more of them floating around than the OE ones now.

I believe the original grilles were actually molded with silver plastic not painted silver. I may be wrong but that's what I think.

Silver grills were molded in a gray or off-white color and painted silver over the entire front with a LOT of overspray on the top. Then the center section was masked off and the body color was painted over the silver. The mask was not very precise and you could see some of the silver outside of the stainless strips.

If you have an original silver grille that someone painted black, it will have the gray/white mounting tabs. If it does, I'd consider removing the paint and then repainting argent silver. I'm told silver over black looks totally different than silver over gray. I've never compared them side by side, though.

Here are a few from my 69 original grill. They may help.
