Default Frame Rail?

Hi,
I have been looking to buy a 67 to 69 Camaro. I have seen alot of ads stating the cars frame rails are good or the cars frame rails need work/replaced. I have owned GTO's in the past so this frame rail thing is new to me.

Can somebody give me a quick lesson in frame rails and what to look out for in a car? I understand that Camaros are Unibodys? And they have a front detachable frame (forgot what you call it) but I thought the rest of the body was all one piece except for the obvious doors and trunk lid.

Thanks!

Run along the rear floor boards and on either side of the trunk area to the back. If you take the back wheel off of a camaro, firebird, nova etc it will be right in front of you. They are prone to rust but they make a couple types of repair kits for them.

That's the problem, they are part of the unibody and it is some work to repair them.

The area that usually rusts out first tends to be around the rear spring eye. If you squeeze it, (the frame in that area) and it moves, or makes a crunching sound, there's most likely an issue.

So the frame rail is actually attached to the body, unlike a GTO in which it is actually a separate part.
It sounds like if you have a bad frame rail its is a pretty big job to fix. I will need to make sure I check any potential cars for a solid rail.
Thanks for all the replys, it was really helpful.

PS. I assume FRITO is not asking real questions because NOBODY seriously has that bad of grammer, puntuation and spelling.

Frame rails can be fixed, replaced, or repaired. Most of the time the decision is whether the car is worth it. A nothing special 6 cyl car might not fall into the fix catagory, while a real Z, or SS 396 car most likely would.
