Yes, if you could prove that the car was raced in a actual SCCA Trans-Am race in 1972 or earlier, the car would have more monetary value restored as that race car than it ever would in a purely stock/restored form. If it only has A-Sedan history rather than actual Trans-Am history, then it would be a toss up and would depend more on whose car it may have been, level of preparation, paint scheme, etc. Tell us more about the car...
