Steve, can you explain a little more what you mean by the vin on the block is not correct with the date stamp? (I don't want you to divulge anything information that may allow somebody to 'create' a fake though.) So how I am understanding it there were specific dates when blocks were stamped??

Back in 1971, my brother trashed the engine in his 69 Chevelle SS and went to an engine shop in Cleveland to get a used BB. He wound up with a 427 out of a wrecked 68 Chevy Cleveland cop car (bought it complete for $275). It was a high perf 427 with a 2 bolt main. He beat the hell out of it, and so did two of my other brothers. He eventually sold it and those guys ran the heck out of it too. It never came apart.
I think he still knows the i.d. on the engine. I'll call him today to see if it was the same as the one posted here. The date stamp on this one looks a little suspicious, if it is a re-stamp, it isn't a bad one. Phil Woj. |

Hi Rob,
Based on information I have collected from other Los Angeles built 68s around this vin (approx 06B 06C), I can tell that the engine date stamp does not coincide with the vin on the block. All the big blocks I have in the list within 2,000 vins before and after 8L163401 are dated close together. The one on this block (May 24th) is fairly close, but is not what it should be. Hope this helps, but let me know if you need any more info. Steve
