Mine was at the very rear of the subframe on the driver's side.

I'm asking that this thread be revisited......

Once Again, another thread with NO conclusion

Needing to know (if possible)

1) Where the 2nd Gen sub frames WERE built ?

2) WHAT letters they were coded with ?

3) Did Norwood ONLY use frames from XYZ and Los Angelses only use frames from ABC.......or was it Frames from all mfg went to both Nor and Van Nuys ???

Another resto point we'll probably never know answer too....somebody other than me needs to do spreadsheet with car build date & location versus subframe date and letter code........

Oh well !!!!!!

I dont know about in 1970,or Van Nuys cars, but I own 3 cars,a 73 Camaro,73 firebird, and a 74 camaro. The number on my frames appears to be a part number,I could never connect it to the VIN trim tag or date{I did change the subframe in the firebird recently}.All my cars had AC,and the hidden VIN on the firewall is near the blower motor.I recently found one more set of numbers on the firebird that do mean something, but I didnt check them on the Camaros. On the bird,I found numbers stamped at the rear of the driveahft tunnel right over the pinion yoke. The numbers are similar to the beggining of the VIN and denote my car as a 1973 Esprit. It would be hard to rebody a 1970-73 Trans Am or Formula using my body shell since these numbers while not the VIN itself do identify the model of the car.

I just checked under my 74 camaro. It has numbers there,I couldnt make them out except that they begin in the number 1 as opposed to 2 like my firebird does, which seems to mean that it is a chevy.I looked at the subframe, and there was a little rust, but I could only make out 2 numbers,it looked like the number 31 was somewhere in between some other illegable numbers.the number 31 doesnt appear in the VIN or the body tag.Of course all my cars are Norwood cars with the 72 and later VIN format.I hope this helps.

I'm thinking ...........

1) 1st digit is Month (but need to see what was used in lieu of 10, 11, or 12)

2) 2nd/3rd digit is day of month

3) 4th/5th digit is year (i.e.70)

4) 6th stamp is letter for frame mfg plant

5) 7th stamp is shift (i.e. 1= 1st shift)
