Default Researching an original owner using a VIN only

Is there a service, private investigator or anyone experienced that can take a VIN and find out who the original owner was of a pre-1970 vehicle?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Other that the Insurance bureau I think you at least need to know the state it was sold new in. Most states have had privacy laws for a number of years.
Read the story about how I traced the ownership of my 1960 Chrysler 300F, its in my website. That was 7 years ago and it was a lot of work.

It gets tough but my suggestions is to start with the previous owner. Sometimes all you need is a city that the car spent some time in. Heres how tough it is for me and my RR, i got the name of the previous owner and cant even find him!
