Default And another new scam

Just received this email from "Wachovia" and I don't even own a Wachovia account. I REALLY LIKE how I am required to do this under federal law!!!!

WACHOVIA
A Wells Fargo CompanyWachovia Security Alert

Dear Wachovia account holder,

During the last 24 hours we have noticed one or more attempts to log in to your Online Banking account from a foreign IP address associated with multiple password failures and we suspect that your Wachovia account may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party.

To help fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify and record information that identifies each person who owns an account, including joint owners.

What you have to do as the rightful account owner is to take the following two easy steps required to verify your identity. After the identity verification is complete your account access will be automatically restored and this will ensure us that your account has not been compromised:

Step 1: First, use the link provided in this message to automatically login to Wachovia EIVP™ (Electronic Identity Verification Program). You will be asked to add at least one Wachovia Credit or Debit card and you will use the PIN (Personal Identification Number) associated with the card. For better online and offline security you can always add more than one card.

Step 2: Review your recent account history for any unauthorized withdrawals or deposits, and check you account profile to make sure no changes have been made. If any unauthorized activity has taken place on your account, report this to Wachovia online security staff immediately.

To get started, please click the link below:

Me either. Especially when you don't even have an account there. I get them sometimes and I just laugh. But someone must fall for them if they still send them out.

Got the same one a few weeks ago. I knew it was a hoax but wondered if somehow someone gained access to some Wells Fargo data as I am a WF client and WF acquired Wachovia last year so there's certainly some database consolidation work going on. Are you a WF client of any kind?

I could see if you blast this message out to thousands you're likely to hit a few real Wachovia clients that just might not think this through and would respond.

With all of the dumb people out there I'm sure hundreds would not know it's a scam and click the link. Pretty sure I work with some people who would believe it.

Dick: I am not a WF client of any kind, so pretty sure this is just a wild swing for these guys, hoping to hit a few actual clients.

I just got a similar one from another bank name that I don't use. I clicked on it to see what they wanted (heavy firewall protection). First your full name, your account #, your password, mother's maiden name, street you grew up on, favorite pets name, and MORE !! If anyone was dumb enough to fill out a page like that, they don't deserve a bank account !!

A while back some scammers targeted a local Credit Union with a similar scam. They actually called people and the Dumb A**'s gave them their card numbers and account numbers. I was at my shop working late and at about 6:30 my line one rang... It was the scam.. I just told them I didn't have that credit card or any accounts at that C/U.. Which I didn't. I hung up and 10 minutes later my line 2 which is a roll over number rang... same scam, different voice. They were doing automated dialing by number order.
a couple of days later it came out in the paper that it was a scam and over 600 people had accounts cleaned out and credit cards maxed out.
Thats almost too hard to believe people fall for it.
