Ed Black, a longtime Albuquerque car dealer, was one of the &quot;wonderful, silent supporters&quot; of the city, Sen. Pete Domenici said Monday.
Black, who was considered &quot;a pillar&quot; in the auto dealer industry, died Thursday of complications from cancer. He was 85.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 this morning at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 619 Copper NW. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park, 924-C Menaul NE.
Domenici recalled that when he was in city government, Black &quot;was one of the old, wonderful, silent supporters of Albuquerque.&quot;
Black, who sold Ed Black Chevrolet in 1991, quietly went about volunteering as well as financially helping both people and causes, according to the Republican congressman. Black, who was an accomplished pilot, also used to fly Domenici to campaign engagements around the state.
&quot;He was a hard worker ... and just belonged in the community,&quot; Domenici said.
Black was a big, gentle man, about 6-foot-2{ and more than 200 pounds. His television ads featured Smiley, a cartoon blackbird with a cackling laugh and a toothy grin. The former site of his dealership at 333 San Mateo SE is now a Wal-Mart.
In Black's 42 years with Chevrolet, he sold more than 82,000 new cars and trucks, he told the Journal in 1991.
&quot;I never dreamed of selling a Chevrolet for $60,000,&quot; Black said, referring to a new Corvette. &quot;The new 1949 Chevy cost about $1,400.&quot;
H.L. &quot;Hickum&quot; Galles Jr., who used to operate the city's other Chevy dealership, said Black &quot;was one of the finest competitors we've ever had.&quot;
The two men were friends who traveled with their wives to national conventions and once toured Switzerland after both dealers had won the trips as awards, Galles said.
&quot;I just thought the world of him,&quot; Galles said.
Born in West Virginia, Black came with his family to Albuquerque in 1926 because his mother had tuberculosis.
At one time, Black's father owned the sprawling Black Ranch, a West Side landholding bordered by the Rio Grande, Rio Puerco, Central Avenue and N.M. 528, said his son, Dr. Randy Black, an Albuquerque ophthalmologist.
Ed Black was a center on the 1939 University of New Mexico football team that lost to Utah in the Sun Bowl, 26-0.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, piloting a glider in the Allies' assault on Europe. He received the Purple Heart decoration.
Afterward, Black returned to the auto business, operating the Kaiser-Fraser dealership before selling Chevrolets.
Black always kept close to UNM, serving several times as president of the Alumni Lettermen's Club and helping young student athletes, including Ray Berube, who ran track and cross country.
Berube, who worked at Black's dealership while attending UNM, later became president of the New Mexico Auto Dealers Association.
&quot;He always gave me advice and counsel,&quot; Berube said. &quot;He was a great influence and guiding light to our industry. Certainly a pillar in our industry, he was respected not only in New Mexico but across the country because of his knowledge and influence in the auto industry.&quot;
Berube said Black was known for being fair with his customers and his employees.
&quot;He was a caring individual and that's why I think he was so involved with people and charitable causes.&quot;
As the United Way campaign chairman, Black helped the charity surpass $1 million in donations in 1964.
Loretto Harrison Black, his wife of 49 years, died in 1997. Other survivors include two daughters, Amy Gayle Black of Albuquerque and Sally Black of Phoenix.</div></div>
