Default 69 Camaro Original Spare and Jack

Just pulled these out of a 69 trunk curious if this is the original spare tire on it. Thanks, Larry

Nice find.

Sure could be. Wheel and jack are both dated Aug. of 68, for a 69 car.
That wheel was used on drum brake Camaros.

I have NEVER seen a definitive source for dating the old tires. I even corresponded with Goodyear directly. The folks were very kind and tried to help, but never could find any info on tire dating for the 40 plus year old tires.

I see lots of posts on different web sites regarding the DOT designation and when that supposedly started, but some of that has been conflicting.

If that is the original spare, it may have never been off the rim. Look for a 2 or 3 digit crayon mark on the inner part of the rim. Usually in white or yellow.

Also interesting (if it is an original that has never been off the rim) as I have also seen info posted lately that the Dill valve stem cap is NOT correct for 69 model year. That LOOKS like a dill cap.

Larry,

This is a picture of my original rim and spare tire from my 69 Camaro. This is a Firestone tire, but I'm posting the tire stamp in case there is something DOT related that someone may know about that is common to tires of this era.

Phil Woj.

From an NCRRS post (at least one typo... 1.1.69 would be half way through the 69 model year):

First use of DOT compliance was 1/1/69 (mid-way through the '68 model year).

From that time to 1971, when DOT standardized the TIN sequence, each mfgr made his own proprietary TIN sequence which contained the source data DOT made mandatory. So, we're essentially 'blind' as to how to decode each mfgr's sequence in this period.

Prior to 1/1/69, the individual mfgrs had their own ID sequences which may or may not have embodied mfgr date information...

I understood that Kelsey tire can read the Goodyear codes, check with them.

Good-Year's aren't too bad to figure out. Firestone - I have never found the secret.
Looks like the tire is an August 68 as well.

Great info Jim. I was unable to find anything like that a few years back when I was looking.

Looks like Larry found a very complete original spare.

Hello, thanks for all the info was told it was all original. Whats a guess on what the tire and wheel are worth. The jack appears to be sold. Thanks, Larry.

Not a huge dollar figure for that one as it is for a drum brake only car, which eliminates SS, COPO, Z/28.
But... I don't know, there may be someone out there restoring a Vert or RS that came with drum brakes, and those wheels.
Just a guess here, but I would say around $300. Same type of tire on a 15 inch Ralley with the same date could bring $2k.

Hello, thank-you for your input. That is the figure I had in mind for the rarity and effort in dealing with shipping it. It will be on ebay in a day or two. Larry
