Yukon positraction for GM 10-bolt ?
Hi,I have a Yukon 10-bolt positraction made for 30 spline axles. The measuring I did in the pic showed 5 inches, but how can I tell for sure what it fits ? I thought I could use it in a 10-bolt rearend from the 60´s but they are 28 bolt, aren´t they ?

Re: Yukon positraction for GM 10-bolt ?
The 8.5" Ten bolt is the most popular and strongest. It came with 28 spline axles until around 1988- then it had 30 spline. It continued to evolve to somewhere around 2000 I think with an 8.6 ring gear.
The 8.2 Ten bolt from the 1960's stopped around 1971 or so. It has a much weaker pinion than the 8.5 rears. I never tried to put the 8.5 in a 8.2 housing. It wouldn't be a bolt in, but I'm not sure it couldn't be made to work by a determined guy. The axles you could upgrade to new or used 12 bolt axles. |

Re: Yukon positraction for GM 10-bolt ?
Thanks Paul, even though it probably could be used in a early 10-bolt axle, I guess the best (strongest) thing would be to use a 8.5 housing and 12-bolt 30 spline axles. Right ?

Re: Yukon positraction for GM 10-bolt ?
I sheared the pinion on an 8.2 once. When you compare the pinion sizes, the 8.5 makes so much more sense- it's like a 12 bolt!
Yes, if you can get a 8.5 housing and some good aftermarket 30 spline axles, I would say it is a wise upgrade. |
