Does anyone have experience with taking a car to the US and selling it while you are there? If so, what's involved?
My friend wants to take his car to Corvettes at Carlisle to sell. Dave |

You can't Dave...unless it is brought back into Canada. It has to be imported into the US by the American buyer.

You sure about this Mark?
I know Legendary takes cars to the US auctions to sell. I'm also sure individual Canadians take their cars to US auctions? Dave |

If it has a Canadian title it cannot be done, considered fraud and importing a car illegally. If legendary has done it... possible the car still has a US title. Do not mess around with the border.. not worth the hassle. My 2 cents.

Absolutely sure that private individuals cannot sell in the US. Technically, you can"t even bring parts into the US to sell there without declaring them.

Tell your buddy to call US Customs and ask them.

If you own property in the US you can title the car under that address. Otherwise ownership must be transferred to a third party (auction house ) for sale. If the car doesn't sell or meet reserve you have to transfer ownership again and import the car back to Canada. With fees or taxes I'm sure.

I think a Canadian may be able to bring his personal car into the USA and have it registered here. I know of a few "Snowbirds" that have done this. They have later "sold" their cars to USA buyers. May operate by state to state or their might be some Federal authority.

Arizona will title a car for a Snowbird. I did this with my 66 W30 after I showed it at Macan in 2013. I shipped the car to Scottsdale for the Winter and when I consigned it to Mecum the following July I applied and got a AZ tile registered at a friends address. When I consigned my Chrysler 300F to Mecum I imported it into the US for the purpose of sale. It did not sell and I brought it home. I should have gotten a re-entry number when I brought it back across the border because when I sold it a month later it had to be imported again. Do not under any circumstances. bring a car in with the purpose of selling it and skip the import process, you will regret it and it could cost you more than you care to deal with.
You must always heave the car consigned to a US business or friend in the US. Legendary likely has a US business licence and can freely move cars and still abide by the rules. The Us import regulators can assess a fine up to $5000.00 if a foreigner sells a car they brought in and later sold it if they feel it was specifically brought in to sell. Even under the Arizona Snowbird loophole my car had to be imported and presented at an Arizona port of entry (airport)for inspection. Us customs can and will insist a car be presented at a border crossing for proper import. I used Livingston International for three imports in 2013 and they did a great job. And RCC is correct if you are a snowbird and decide to sell the 1999 Taurus you brought down as your winter car 8 years ago and want to sell it, it can be done. Always remember the term "passage of time". Good luck, follow procedures and don't be afraid, its an easy process when all the "I" are dotted and "T" are crossed. Paul
