I have a 12 bolt A body axle for my Chevelle and took the carrier out several years ago to change the ratio. I'm having a buddy reassemble it tomorrow and looked it over to make certain I had all the parts. When I saw the carrier number and the small window, it triggered some vibrations in the cob webs about this style used on the COPO's. After doing a search and reading past information it unfortunately, doesn't appear to be one. Still a good carrier for some fun and abuse.
I couldn't find a stamp on the ring gear but the inspection stamp is the same as the pinion.

That one has the standard 200 pound preload springs and thin plates. I've seen a thousand of these Eaton units and I've only seen one 30174 that didn't have the square hole.

![]() My buddy put it back together with the original shims and the backlash checked good, so ready to go, well almost, needs shoes and wheel cylinders... I bought new axle bearings at NAPA and they are .001-2 smaller diameter and fit loose in the tube. He wasn't happy with that, so we put the old ones back, that really weren't bad, I was going to replace as a cautionary measure. I kept telling him it was only going to go a couple miles anyway.... 1/4 mile at a time.... ![]()

A few years ago I would have told you that all of the 174 cases had the small square window.
