Default Trying to locate a COPO Chevelle

Hi all,
I'm new to this board but I've been a regular on Team Chevelle for a couple of years (70L34 over there). Anyway, I'm trying to track down a '69 Scuncio COPO that I lost track of in 1997. I tried calling the previous owner but the number had been disconnected. Is there any way for a non-police officer such as myself to locate someone? I'm interested in buying this car to eventually give it a loving restoration. Any help would be great. Thanks--and it's great to see such knowledgeable people on this forum!

scuncio;

Try the following site:

There are a number of sites like this on the web. Good Luck!

COPO:

Thanks for fixing the link...you've beat me to the last 2! It looks like some people are finally getting the hang of the UBB code. It's not that tough, just takes some getting used to. Thanks for keeping an eye on things!

James;

The link will help with current owners only. I am not sure how to find original owner information. If you find a source please post it.

I've done the owner history thing a number of times for various cars that I have owned. Normally you have to start with the most recent owner and work backwards. The internet has made things somewhat easier, however the privacy law changes several years ago have made it more difficult in getting infomation from State DMV's on previous owners. As I found out in several cases, sometimes owners do not even re-title the car in their name before passing it along to a new owner. In one case, I found the original LS-6 engine for a car I owned sitting in the garage of an owner who never titled it in his name. It was only through phone conversations with other owners that I was able to even know he existed and then lucked out getting the engine.

An NICB search will give you when the car was shipped from Chevy and which dealership it went to. This is normally only accessible to law enforcement of insurance agencies.

Good luck!

doh!

Greekboy from Team Chevelle owns that COPO now. The damn thing was $800 when I found it! Who'd think a COPO would depreciate.

Owners not titling cars is very common. I hate to admit this but years ago my father in law used to buy 67-69 Camaro's ultra cheap and pull the 12 bolts or BB's or whatever then sell them for the same money or more than he paid. Dozens of them. He is responsible for ruining alot of matching number cars. Luckily he isn't really into 67-69 Camaro's anymore except for all the parts he has stashed. I am convinced cars go through alot more abuse in the northeast. Its not that easy to find a matching number car around here compared to other places. Don't hold what my father in law used to do against me but you have to check every aspect of a car. He is only one of a few that buys cars, doesn't title them, then sell them again and you would never know by doing database checks.
