Fuel Pump Module

In the fuel tank of our '97 Supercharged Olds is a black module in the electrical leads to the fuel pump. Anyone know what it is?

Chevelleless after 46 years......but we did find a low mileage, six speed, silver 2005 Corvette. It will just have to do for now.

Some cars had an emergency fuel shut off that gets tripped by a sensor. To shut off fuel in a rear end collision. just a guess.
